Job Overview A shipping supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the shipping process within a warehouse, including coordinating staff, ensuring timely and accurate order fulfillment, monitoring inventory levels, and managing shipping documentation, while prioritizing efficiency and adherence to company policies and safety regulations; essentially, they lead the team that prepares and dispatches outgoing shipments from the warehouse.
Responsibilities and Duties
Staff Management:
Supervise and train shipping personnel, assigning tasks and monitoring performance.
Schedule shifts and manage labor productivity to meet shipping deadlines.
Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback to team members.
Shipping Operations:
Oversee the picking, packing, and labeling of outgoing orders to ensure accuracy.
Coordinate with other departments like receiving and inventory control to maintain proper stock levels.
Monitor shipping schedules and prioritize orders to meet delivery deadlines.
Manage loading and unloading operations, ensuring proper product handling.
Documentation and Compliance:
Maintain accurate shipping records, including bills of lading, packing slips, and shipping manifests.
Verify shipment details against orders and ensure compliance with shipping regulations.
Process shipping labels and necessary documentation for carriers.
Inventory Management:
Conduct cycle counts to maintain accurate inventory levels and identify discrepancies.
Monitor stock levels and communicate potential shortages to purchasing department.
Performance Analysis and Improvement:
Analyze shipping data to identify bottlenecks and areas for improvement.
Implement process changes to optimize shipping efficiency and reduce costs.
Track key performance indicators (KPIs) related to shipping accuracy and on-time delivery. Qualifications
Strong leadership and supervisory skills
Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy
Proficiency with warehouse management systems (WMS)
Knowledge of shipping procedures and carrier regulations
Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines Education and Experience
Prior experience in a warehouse environment, preferably in a shipping supervisory role
Familiarity with warehouse operations, including picking, packing, and labeling
