Working evening or overnight shifts, staff ensure resident safety, enforce shelter rules, and provide support with daily needs. This role serves as the first point of contact for residents, volunteers, and visitors, helping create a safe and welcoming environment while maintaining accurate documentation and communication with shelter leadership. Responsibilities Prepare the shelter for opening and closing each shift. Enforce and follow all shelter rules and policies. Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of residents. Document resident check-ins, dismissals, and incidents accurately. Maintain a shift journal of shelter activities for leadership review. Assist residents with chores, laundry, and daily needs. Conduct inventory of supplies as directed. Keep all client information confidential. Report any incidents of fighting, abusive behavior, or safety concerns immediately. Build and maintain respectful, encouraging relationships with residents. Provide verbal or written updates on resident progress to the Shelter Coordinator. Skills Previous experience working with homeless or at-risk populations preferred. Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Ability to remain calm, professional, and effective under pressure or in emergencies. Comfortable working with individuals who may have physical, intellectual, or mental health challenges. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Willingness and availability to work evening and overnight shifts during the shelter season (November-April).
