General Laborer - Field Operations (Construction) Job Description This role supports field operations on commercial and multifamily construction projects by assisting excavation and utility crews, preparing work areas, and operating tools and equipment. You will work closely with site teams to stay one step ahead of active crews, helping ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality completion of underground utilities, site work, and related civil construction activities. The position offers clear opportunities for advancement into higher-level roles over time. Responsibilities Support field operations on commercial, multifamily, and site development projects by assisting excavation and utility crews. Prepare work areas in advance of excavation and utility activities, ensuring sites are safe, organized, and ready for the next phase of work. Use hand tools and small power tools to complete general construction and utility-related tasks as directed. Operate and assist with the setup and use of rotary lasers to help establish grades and elevations under supervision. Measure distances and verify dimensions using tape measures and other measuring tools to support accurate layout and installation. Assist with general labor duties such as loading and unloading materials, cleaning work areas, and maintaining a tidy and safe jobsite. Stay one step ahead of field crews by anticipating needs, staging materials, and organizing tools and equipment. Apply basic math skills to interpret measurements, think through field challenges, and make practical, jobsite-appropriate decisions. Contribute to drainage, grading, and utility construction activities as needed, following instructions from supervisors and experienced operators. Follow all safety procedures and practices while working around trench boxes, excavation areas, and heavy equipment. Support general production tasks in a fast-paced environment where priorities and tasks may change quickly. Drive to and from jobsites using reliable transportation, arriving on time and ready for physically demanding, hands-on work. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience in underground utilities, site work, or related fieldwork. Comfort using hand tools such as shovels, picks, and basic construction tools in a field environment. Experience using small power tools safely and effectively on construction or utility projects. Ability to use rotary lasers or the capability and willingness to quickly develop this skill with relevant field experience. Basic math skills to calculate measurements, understand elevations, and solve straightforward field problems. Interest in and enjoyment of physical, hands-on work in a fast-paced, changing jobsite environment. Ability to adapt to shifting tasks and priorities while maintaining productivity and attention to detail. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to travel to various commercial jobsites. Comfort working outdoors on commercial construction sites in varying weather conditions. General construction, general labor, and general production experience in a field or jobsite setting. Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately. Comfort working around drainage, grading, civil, and utility construction activities. Willingness to learn and use technology such as GPS and laser equipment as needed. Additional Skills & Qualifications P6 license held or ability to obtain a P6 license within a reasonable timeframe. Experience installing drainage systems or water-related infrastructure. Familiarity with trench boxes and excavation safety practices. Proficiency in using Topcon GPS systems on construction or civil projects. Ability to perform layout work, including setting stakes and establishing grades. Capability to read and interpret blueprints and elevations accurately. Experience working on grading, civil, or utility construction projects. Comfort working with newer equipment and modern construction technology. Strong communication skills to coordinate with field crews and office staff. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based on commercial jobsites and is primarily outdoors. You will work around excavation areas, trench boxes, and heavy equipment, following established safety practices. The environment is fast-paced, with tasks and priorities that can change quickly as projects progress. You will be supported by office staff for data tracking, email communication, computer usage, and scheduling, while working with newer equipment and modern technology on outdoor commercial sites. Job Type & Location This is a Contract position based out of Middletown, CT. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr.
