Job Description

Job Title:
General Laborer Job Description The General Laborer supports daily production by helping create custom concrete structures such as panels, flared ends, side walls, and custom forms in a fast-paced precast environment. You will work both indoors and outdoors, assist with yard and material handling tasks, and operate equipment such as forklifts as needed. This is a contract-to-hire role that offers cross-training in multiple areas and the opportunity to grow with a stable, team-oriented operation. Responsibilities Assist with general production duties to manufacture custom concrete structures, including concrete panels, flared ends, side walls, and custom forms. Handle concrete materials and components safely and efficiently throughout the production process. Use tape measures and other measuring tools to perform precise measurements down to 1/8 of an inch. Operate forklifts to move materials, products, and forms around the yard and plant, when trained and authorized. Support yard operations, including loading and unloading materials, organizing products, and maintaining a clean and orderly work area. Read and follow basic instructions, layouts, or blueprints when required to complete form work and general construction tasks. Use hand tools and power tools, such as wire cutters and other basic construction tools, to assemble, adjust, and maintain forms and related equipment. Perform general construction and labor tasks in a precast concrete production environment, including lifting, carrying, and positioning materials up to 50 lbs. Work collaboratively with a small department team and broader production crew to meet daily and weekly output goals, which can range from 20-75 structures per day depending on project flow. Adapt to different tasks and projects as needed, including cross-training in multiple areas of production and yard work. Follow all safety procedures, including wearing required personal protective equipment and working safely in a dusty, construction-like environment. Work full first-shift hours and participate in overtime, including occasional Saturday shifts, as production demands require. Maintain consistent attendance and punctuality to support production schedules and eligibility for attendance-related incentives. Essential Skills Ability to lift up to 50 lbs safely and repeatedly as part of daily tasks. At least 1+ years of experience using hand tools and power tools, including wire cutters and similar construction tools. At least 1+ years of concrete or construction experience, particularly in building or working with concrete structures. Experience working with precise measurements to within 1/8 of an inch using tape measures and other measuring tools. Basic math skills to support accurate measuring, layout, and material calculations. General material handling experience in an industrial, construction, or production setting. Ability to operate or learn to operate forklifts for material handling and yard work. Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and tasks. Strong teamwork skills and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Adaptability and willingness to be cross-trained in multiple areas of production and yard operations. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions in a non-temperature-controlled, dusty environment. Reliability and consistent attendance to support production schedules and overtime needs. Additional Skills & Qualifications Large industrial forklift experience - 1+ years (preferred). Farm work experience - 1+ years (preferred), especially in physically demanding, outdoor environments. Ability to read blueprints to support form work and general construction tasks (preferred). Previous experience in precast concrete, general construction, or production environments. Experience with shipping, loading, and yard operations in an industrial or construction setting. Familiarity with form work, hand tools, and general construction practices. Comfort working with concrete, including mixing, pouring, finishing, or handling precast components. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in measuring, cutting, and assembling components. Willingness to work contract-to-hire with a 680-hour contract period prior to conversion to long-term employment. Openness to working extended hours and overtime during busy seasons, including early morning and Saturday shifts. Why Work Here? This opportunity offers a stable, long-term career path in a specialized precast concrete environment where most work is performed inside the plant, which is uncommon in this industry. While on contract, you receive weekly pay, eight paid holidays, eligibility for comprehensive benefits starting the first of the month after you begin, and a paid lunch if you stay on-site and eat in the break room. You can also earn a weekly attendance bonus based on the hours you work, providing a meaningful boost to your income when you maintain strong attendance. Long-term, you gain access to a robust benefits package, including medical, vision, dental, short- and long-term disability, and a flexible spending account, as well as a 401(k) plan with a dollar-for-dollar match up to 4% after 30 days of full-time employment. The culture emphasizes recognition and appreciation, with monthly food trucks, vending options, birthday celebrations, safety days with catered food, and ongoing employee recognition. Paid time off accrues from the start, with 80 hours per year and increases after the third year of service, plus eight paid holidays. The environment rewards individuals who prove themselves, offering strong advancement opportunities and the chance to build a long-term career in a supportive, team-focused setting. Work Environment This is a fully on-site role in the Des Moines metro area within a precast concrete production facility. The position follows a first-shift schedule, typically running from 6:00 a.m. to approximately 2:30-4:00 p.m. Under busy seasonal conditions, hours may extend from 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, with overtime opportunities on Saturdays from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., usually communicated by Thursday. The facility is covered but not temperature-controlled and is similar to a construction site, with dusty and dirty conditions and exposure to varying weather. Approximately 80-90% of the work takes place inside the plant, with the remainder in the yard and outdoor areas. The team consists of around 60 people during most of the year and ramps up to about 80 in the spring and summer, with smaller department teams of 3-4 people working closely together. The environment is fast-paced and highly team-oriented, with an emphasis on cross-training so employees can work in multiple areas. Required dress includes a hard hat, jeans, steel-toed boots, and safety glasses, and you must be comfortable working in a physically demanding, construction-like setting with regular use of hand tools, power tools, forklifts, and other production equipment.
