Yard Worker Job Description The Yard Worker plays a key role in supporting an automotive auction yard by accurately checking in vehicles as they arrive on site. This position focuses on visually inspecting vehicles, documenting their condition, and entering information into a handheld device to ensure an accurate online listing. The role requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, using basic technology, and performing general labor tasks with minimal supervision. Responsibilities Check in vehicles as they are delivered to the yard and ensure each vehicle is properly logged into the system. Perform a thorough visual inspection of each vehicle, including exterior, glass, and interior components. Take clear, accurate photos of vehicles for use on the company website. Complete an inventory of each vehicle, noting the presence and condition of key parts such as fenders, bumpers, hoods, trunks, and glass. Inspect basic interior components such as the steering wheel, seats, and radio, and document their condition. Attempt to start each vehicle and record whether it runs. Use a battery pack to jump-start vehicles that do not start on their own, following safety guidelines. Enter all inspection details and inventory information into a handheld device similar to a tablet. Use basic computer skills to support data entry and inventory tracking tasks. Work independently in the yard with little to no direct supervision while maintaining productivity and accuracy. Communicate with team members and supervisors using a handheld radio when support or clarification is needed. Follow all safety procedures while working in the yard and handling vehicles and equipment. Maintain a clean and orderly work area within the yard. Adapt quickly to a short training period and apply learned procedures consistently. Essential Skills Ability to perform general labor tasks in an outdoor yard environment. Experience with basic warehouse or inventory-related work, preferably involving vehicles or similar assets. Familiarity with common vehicle body parts such as fenders, bumpers, hoods, trunks, and glass components. Ability to recognize and document basic interior components such as steering wheels, seats, and radios. Comfort using a smartphone or tablet for data entry and documentation. Basic computer skills to support inventory and documentation processes. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while staying focused and productive. Capability to work outdoors 100% of the time in varying weather conditions. Ability to learn new tasks quickly within a short training period and apply instructions accurately. Strong attention to detail when inspecting and documenting vehicle condition. Additional Skills & Qualifications No formal training is required for this position. Previous experience in general labor, warehouse inventory, or automotive yard work is beneficial. Comfort using handheld radios for communication is helpful. Willingness to perform physical tasks associated with working in a vehicle yard. Ability to adapt to changing business needs, including occasional Saturday overtime when required. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is a 100% outdoor position, with all work conducted in the vehicle yard. Employees spend their shifts outside in all weather conditions, with the yard secured by fencing around the site. Breaks and lunch can be taken indoors, and during severe weather additional breaks are provided for safety and comfort. Safety gear and gloves are supplied, while employees provide their own clothing. The preferred attire is jeans and boots in a casual environment, with clothing free of large logos or offensive print. The office area is open, clean, and organized with workstations for administrative tasks. The regular schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with occasional Saturday overtime of approximately 4 to 5 hours based on business needs. The current team consists of about eight employees, and the company is looking to add two more team members to this collaborative yard environment. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of East Dundee, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
