General Laborer / Saw Operator / Forklift Operator Job Description This role supports a busy industrial facility by performing a combination of general labor, saw operation, material handling, and forklift operation. You will begin with hands-on training in the shipping department to learn day-to-day operations, then move into your primary assignment based on skills and business needs. The position is highly physical, team-oriented, and requires comfort working with measuring tools and industrial equipment in a steel manufacturing environment. Responsibilities Complete an initial 2-3 day training period in the shipping department to learn full day-to-day operations and workflow. Pull and stage material to place on the saw according to work orders and production requirements. Operate saw equipment safely and efficiently after training, following all instructions and quality standards. Use a tape measure accurately to measure materials and verify dimensions before and after cutting. Apply basic math skills to calculate measurements, quantities, and adjustments as needed. Perform general labor tasks such as loading, unloading, sorting, and organizing materials in the production and shipping areas. Handle steel and other materials safely, including lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Work effectively in a team environment, communicating clearly with coworkers and supporting a smooth workflow. Train on and obtain in-house certification to operate forklifts and other material handling equipment. Operate forklifts and fork trucks to move, stack, and transport materials throughout the facility once trained and certified. Use power tools and other production equipment safely, following all safety procedures and guidelines. Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper storage of tools, materials, and equipment. Follow all safety rules and procedures related to steel manufacturing, material handling, and equipment operation. Demonstrate a strong work ethic by arriving on time, staying engaged throughout the shift, and completing assigned tasks. Assist with shipping and receiving tasks, including preparing materials for shipment and checking incoming materials as needed. Essential Skills Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately in an industrial or manufacturing setting. Comfort performing physical labor, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a constant basis. Basic math skills to understand and work with simple measurements and calculations. Experience in a manufacturing or production environment. Material handling experience in an industrial, warehouse, or construction setting. Experience using measuring tools, especially tape measures, in day-to-day work. Previous forklift or fork truck operating experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment. Ability to work well in a team-oriented environment and follow directions. High level of reliability, work ethic, and willingness to perform hands-on tasks. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in steel manufacturing or working with steel materials. Experience in construction, production, or concrete work. Experience operating power tools safely in an industrial or construction setting. Prior general labor experience in a warehouse, yard, or manufacturing facility. Work Environment This position is based in an industrial steel manufacturing and shipping facility with a strong focus on safety and teamwork. You will work primarily on the 1st shift, Monday through Friday, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The work is hands-on and physically demanding, involving frequent lifting, standing, walking, and operating equipment throughout the shift. You will regularly work around forklifts, saws, power tools, and other material handling equipment in a busy production and shipping environment. The facility emphasizes safe work practices, proper use of tools and machinery, and clear communication across teams. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Loves Park, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
