Job Title:
Material Handler Job Description The Material Handler safely moves and organizes steel materials using overhead cranes and sit-down forklifts in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. This role supports machine operators by loading and unloading equipment, prepares products for shipment, and helps maintain accurate inventory and labeling. The position offers hands-on training on brake press machines, creating a pathway to expand skills and grow within the operation. Responsibilities Operate an overhead crane to move and position steel materials safely and efficiently. Operate a sit-down forklift to transport materials throughout the facility. Assist machine operators with loading and unloading tables and brake press machines. Band and wrap pallets to prepare products for storage and shipment. Use grinding tools to finish or prepare materials as needed. Support training activities on brake press machines by assisting with material handling and setup. Coordinate with the lead who moves pieces and sets up machines to retain parts correctly. Take inventory of materials when required and report any discrepancies. Label incoming and outgoing products accurately to ensure proper identification and tracking. Load and unload trucks with incoming materials and outgoing finished goods. Use a tape measure accurately to 1/16th of an inch to verify material dimensions. Follow all safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment while performing all tasks. Essential Skills Previous manufacturing experience in a production or industrial environment. Hands-on experience operating overhead cranes for material handling. Experience operating a sit-down forklift to move materials safely. Ability to read and use a tape measure accurately to 1/16th of an inch. Material handling experience in a manufacturing setting. Ability to use grinding tools or grinding machines. Comfort working around brake press machines and other heavy equipment. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and work as part of a team. Commitment to safety practices in a manufacturing environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with steel materials in a manufacturing or fabrication environment. Willingness to learn and train to become a brake press operator. Strong attention to detail for labeling, measuring, and inventory tasks. Reliable attendance and ability to work occasional Saturdays when needed. Ability to work in an environment that may be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is based on the manufacturing floor, working closely with machine operators, welders, and maintenance personnel. The schedule is a first-shift role, typically 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with up to approximately 45 hours per week and occasional Saturdays as needed. The facility floor can be a bit dirty due to normal industrial activity and tends to be warmer in the summer and cooler in the winter. The role requires working around overhead cranes, forklifts, brake presses, and other heavy machinery. Steel-toe boots are required as part of the dress code, along with adherence to all safety and personal protective equipment guidelines. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of University Park, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
