1 2. Skills Needed- Entry-level roles: Strong communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and the ability to adapt and meet performance goals in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
- Skilled roles: Forklift drivers, clerks, and machine operators typically need prior experience in a produce environment. We provide training for employees promoted from within.
- Most common gaps: Reliability and attendance, including frequent absences, tardiness, and difficulty managing personal responsibilities that affect consistent work. 3. Hiring and Retention Challenges Our applicant pool is limited, and staffing agencies we work with face the same difficulties, including candidates who do not pass drug screenings. Our turnover is high and driven by several factors:
Compensation:
Some employees treat these roles as temporary and leave when they find higher-paying work.Schedules:
Our end times can vary with production needs, which makes it hard for employees to plan around family responsibilities.- Work environment: Some employees have difficulty working in our cold warehouse, even with protective clothing provided.
Transportation:
Employees without reliable transportation struggle with attendance or choose jobs closer to home.
•
Childcare:
Employees with young children have trouble finding care that fits early or variable schedules. 4. Training and Advancement We provide in-house training in food safety, warehouse and equipment safety (including lockout/tagout and machine guarding), fire and emergency procedures, and workplace harassment prevention. We also promote from within and train employees for skilled roles such as forklift operation, clerical work, and machine operation. One area where we would welcome support is forklift train-the-trainer certification. Having a supervisor certified to train others would let us provide consistent forklift training in-house and rely less on outside providers. 5. Programs and Partnerships We have had positive experiences with South Texas College, which has provided our employees with forklift, CPR/First Aid, and general warehouse training. We have also taken part in training and grant opportunities through the City of Pharr without significant issues with paperwork or delays. We would like to continue these partnerships and explore additional programs that help develop employees and improve retention. We believe support in areas such as transportation, childcare, and work-readiness skills could make a meaningful difference for employers like us. We are also happy to host facility tours or discuss training partnerships with education providers.
