Job Description

Class Characteristics:
Under general direction, assists with maintenance and repairs of wastewater collection lines and water distribution lines, including pump stations, meter readings, testing, water quality, work orders, report preparation and logs, etc.; assists other departments/divisions as requested; performs related work as required.
General Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates and maintains heavy and small equipment Performs repairs, installations, maintenance and construction to water distribution system and wastewater collection system throughout the service area; ensures proper paperwork is completed following completion of work Assists with the installation of new service lines and collection lines as needed, in compliance with established procedures and standards and federal, state and local laws Checks for system leaks by responding to customer input and monitoring the distribution system Inspects and performs repair of wastewater collection system Maintains records and maps of all water distribution line and wastewater collection lines, valves, pump stations, meters, etc. Performs water distribution and wastewater collection testing as needed Completes jobs from work orders; returns work orders to utility office staff for further processing Responds to emergency situations involving water distribution and wastewater collection systems Follows up on job status with supervisor and utility office staff to keep them informed of progress Serves as liaison with customers, contractors and businesses Assists with meter readings and maintenance, pump station maintenance and required checks Attends necessary training programs/testing to maintain required Wastewater Collection or Wastewater Collection License On call duties on a rotating basis (including night and weekend duty) May be called out for emergency duty 24/7 even when not on call (ex. water/sewer leaks) Assists other departments/divisions as requested, often performing tasks unrelated to normal job duties
Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) supplemented by sufficient work experience acceptable by the Kentucky Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Cabinet to have or obtain required level of licensing in Water Distribution and/or Wastewater Collection for grade.
Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge:
Extensive knowledge of water distribution and wastewater collection systems, including construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of systems Extensive knowledge of federal, state and local laws and administrative regulations reference wastewater collection system Extensive knowledge of materials used in public works activities Extensive knowledge of functions and servicing/maintenance requirements of equipment and machinery Extensive knowledge of and ability to ensure compliance with safety requirements Extensive knowledge of the geography of the service area
Abilities:
1. Ability to detect mechanical flaws and assist with minor repairs on equipment 2. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officers and employees, and the general public 3. Ability to operate departmental equipment
Licensing Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and required Water Distribution license(s)
Certification Requirements:
Must possess and maintain required level of licensing in Water Distribution issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a condition of employment and continued employment in the class.
