Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Under general supervision performs work of moderate difficulty in performing emergency services relating to the water distribution system of the City; performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Answers complaints or reports of main breaks, service breaks, leaks, damaged or leaking fire hydrants and drives emergency truck to the scene. Verifies main breaks, locates curb boxes, manholes and turnoff valves. Notifies concerned parties of water shutoff and informs them of the procedures to follow. Shuts off mains and notifies proper personnel Controls water of cut service lines and determines responsibility of repairs. Locates damaged fire hydrants and turns off water at branch valve or main and reports a hydrant out of service. Removes customers' defective water meters, inserts replacement meters, and brings non-functional meters into the shop. Makes turn-offs and turn-ons for repairs or collections as needed. Determines the responsible party for repairs of service leaks. Sets up traffic patterns and barricades with or without flashers and takes other necessary actions to insure safety. Pumps out fire hydrants as needed. Arranges for water supply for out of service customers by connecting as hose to an adjacent house or structure. Makes minor repairs on various water facilities. May inspect and exercise valves. Digs up curb boxes and valves, lifts valve/manhole covers and loosens manhole covers or breaks blacktop covering manhole covers using various tools. Maintains records as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Water distribution system including materials and procedures used Safety procedures The hand tools used in the work Skill in: Map and atlas reading Preparing reports and work records Dealing effectively with the public Ability to: Work with individuals of diverse backgrounds Establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, peers, superiors, vendor representatives and clients.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND CERTIFICATIONS
Graduation from high school or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency tests and two (2) years experience in the maintenance of underground utilities that are under pressure. Must possess a valid driver's license
