Job Description
The Waste Services Supervisor supervises and assigns refuse and/or recycling collection activities for several crews within a district or a work center. The incumbent performs related duties as required. Waste Services is responsible for weekly curbside waste and every other week curbside recycling collection for over 151,000 customers in the urban services district as well as collection of over 200 public litter baskets in the downtown Nashville corridor. The division also operates four convenience centers where residents of Davidson County can bring waste, recycling, bulk items, food waste, household hazardous waste, and other items for recycling or disposal and eight recycling drop-off locations available to residents who do not qualify for curbside recycling collection. Waste Services currently employs staff members working in collection, administration, customer service, education, landfill engineering, development review, and outreach. Supervises several crews within a designated section or service within the work center. Coordinates activities with other sections or divisions as needed. Participates in the development of routes and route assignments. Investigates and resolves complaints from the public. Maintains records and prepares basic reports. May operate, tow, or transport equipment or commercial motor vehicles. Performs various supervisory duties. Assigns and reviews the work of employees. Evaluates the performance of the employees under his/her direct supervision. Reviews the evaluations given by his/her subordinates. Approves leave requests. Counsels with and corrects employees as needed. Inspects equipment and vehicles for safety and/or maintenance issues and reports any issues or problems identified. High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of experience in waste management collection activities such as refuse collection activities or a related area. Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or higherWORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to operate Metro equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner. Physical demands include walking, standing, climbing, lifting. Must have the strength and agility to allow the employee to perform job duties which would be found at the level of medium work (i.e. exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force) Working conditions include performing job duties indoors and outdoors with extreme temperatures, wet and humid surroundings, sufficient noise, fumes, odors, and dust. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.
