Eldridge, Iowa Job Summary Under general supervision, of the Roadside Vegetation Specialist and Secondary Roads Superintendent, the Roadside Vegetation Technician assists with the control and destruction of noxious weeds in the County by spraying and trimming brush growing in the rights-of-way (ROW). Assists in seeding County roadway ditches and cutting brush and trees in the ROW as directed. Performs manual labor and operates heavy trucks. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Assists with identification of noxious weed problem areas and weed control programs; cuts, removes, piles, and burns brush; trims trees. Assists with new seeding along roadways including operating tractors, no-till drills, hydro seeders and broadcast seeders. Safely and efficiently operates heavy trucks utilized in road maintenance and construction projects; operates a heavy truck and plow for snow and ice removal. Performs manual labor necessary to participate in maintenance and construction projects including patching black top and concrete roads, laying pipe and tile, building catch basins, mowing and clearing ROWs, spreading rock, digging and cleaning ditches, shoulder construction and maintenance, crack routing and sealing, bridge and culvert repair, and erecting and replacing road signs. Performs maintenance on equipment including preparing trucks for use, cleaning, and routine and preventative care; applies grease to zerk fittings; tops off fluid levels; changes light bulbs and washings. Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy. Performs related duties as assigned. Standards forInitial Consideration Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND two (2) years of experience in road maintenance or similar experience which includes the operation of heavy trucks; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.Knowledge of:
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances. Native, introduced, and invasive plant species. Work safety policies, procedures, and practices. Road and bridge maintenance and construction methods. Tools, materials, chemicals, and methods used to control roadside vegetation.Skill in:
Applying appropriate pesticides and other control methods to weeds and invasive plant species. Identifying native plant species. Preparing clear and concise reports. Interacting tactfully and professionally with County staff, outside agencies, and the public. Operating a variety of heavy equipment. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing. Supplemental Information License and Certification Requirements Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's license. Tank endorsement preferred.. Must possess a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license or obtain license within two (2) months of hire.Physical Demands and Working Environment:
Work is performed primarily outdoors throughout Scott County. Work requires exposure to potentially dangerous tools, equipment, and machinery, hazards associated with traffic, extreme weather conditions, hazardous chemicals, and wildlife.
