Downtown, St. Louis, MO Pest Control Worker is assigned to the Department of Health Vector Control Program under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Program Manager. The incumbent performs rodent and insect inspections, community surveillance, and education. The Pest Control Worker is required to serve in the Incident Command Structure (ICS) as assigned. This position will play a role in Public Health Emergency Preparedness, Prevention, and Response, and they must be able to respond any time should such an event occur. They will also investigate citizen complaints from the Citizens Service Bureau and may be required to participate in investigations regarding sanitation. The Pest Control Worker is responsible for adhering to environmental health ordinances and regulations. They will inspect the exterior of buildings and premises for signs of pests or infestation, determine the type of treatment needed to eliminate pests, use baits to remove or kill pests, apply pesticides in and around buildings, alleyways and other structures, assist with integrated pest management plan, conduct neighborhood surveillances, disseminate pest control prevention materials, and apply pesticides according to City of St. Louis codified ordinances and State of Missouri laws and regulations. Must be available for evening and weekend assignments, or for emergencies as needed.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Operates vehicles and trucks equipped with mosquito power spraying equipment, operates mosquito back-pack spraying equipment, operates pesticide mixing equipment used in power spraying equipment, maintains and places mosquito trapping equipment at various locations, and operates other pest control-related equipment as needed. Inspects the exterior of buildings and premises for signs of pests or infestation, determines the type of treatment needed to eliminate pests, uses baits to remove or kill pests, applies pesticides in and around buildings, alleyways, and other structures, assists with integrated pest management plan, conducts neighborhood surveillances, disseminates pest control prevention materials, and applies pesticides according to City of St. Louis codified ordinances and State of Missouri laws and regulations. Maintains daily records and files of work performed, inventory of supplies and pesticides, and areas/addresses inspected and treated. Communicates with property owners, occupants, and the general public; instructs on pest prevention techniques and information. Serves as a trained professional witness in City housing court cases regarding pests, infestation, or sanitation violations. Responds to emergency situations such as bioterrorism, hazardous material spills. May be required to work long hours or unscheduled hours in emergency situations. Works with other agency personnel in City, State, and Federal government. Participates in NIMS and the National Incident Command Systems. Collects environmental samples, maneuvers around hazardous situations, bends down and collects samples from stagnant pools, observes surroundings at lower and/or higher levels, and lifts objects up to fifty pounds. Drives throughout the City to locations for inspections or in response to emergencies.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to communicate with property owners to gain cooperation for the abatement of pests and educate on acceptable sanitation standards to prevent infestation or public nuisances. Ability to maintain current knowledge of local ordinances, State Regulations, and Federal Regulations that apply to pesticides and its application.Data Utilization:
Requires the ability to perform basic level of data analysis including the ability to review, classify, categorize, prioritize and/or reference data, statutes and/or guidelines and/or group, rank, investigate and diagnose. Requires discretion in determining and referencing such to established standards to recognize interactive effects and relationships.Human Interaction:
Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance and/or interpretation to others, such as citizens, public officials, and co-workers on how to apply policies, procedures and standards to specific situations.Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or provide simple but continuous adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as trucks, foggers, sprayers, microscope, and a computer, and/or materials used in performing essential functions.Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a variety of advisory data and information such as technical operating manuals, sanitation notices, ordinances, surveillance reports, statutes, procedures, guidelines and non-routine correspondence.Mathematical Aptitude:

Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances.Physical Requirements:
Tasks require the ability to regularly perform moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of lifting, pushing and pulling moderately heavy to heavy objects and materials, twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds. Tasks require the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, bend, and climb in order to perform inspection and treatment duties.Sensory Requirements:
Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and odors associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks. Requires the ability to distinguish objects clearly both at near and far-range such as collecting samples. Qualifications Some experience working in pest control, which includes the ability to read and comprehend written instructions, prepare and maintain records, and perform physically demanding work.Certification:
Required by the State of Missouri to obtain and maintain a license as a Certified Public Operator by completion of the working test (probationary) period. The Worker must register for the pesticide exam, apply for a Certified Public Operator license, and submit the application to the Missouri Department of Agriculture.License:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Please note type of license, number, class and expiration date on the Employment Application. Only qualified applicants who provide proof of a valid driver's license will be considered for this position.Preference:
