Job Description

Regular Schedule:
Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM [This position will require weekend and overtime hours.]
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT WORKER I DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This position involves the responsibility for assisting in the efficient operation of facilities operated by the Oneida- Herkimer Solid Waste Management Authority by inspecting the moving waste stream to identify and remove incompatible materials. The incumbent directs waste haulers where to dump the wastes brought in and routinely operates trucks, snow plows, and other equipment such as front-end loaders, skid-steer loaders, dump trucks, and other necessary equipment required for the operation and maintenance of the plant facilities. The work is performed under direct supervision of a higher level operator, with limited leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in carrying out details of work. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. The incumbent performs related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
(Illustrative Only) Operates front-end or bucket loaders, forklifts, and other specialized equipment at the direction of a superior; Inspects processed materials for compatibility with the process being utilized; Performs minor maintenance and repair work on assigned equipment such as belt replacement and oiling and greasing gears; Performs a variety of simple manual tasks such as shoveling snow and earth, painting, general building and maintenance work, and grounds keeping; Loads and unloads vehicles; Assists a higher level operator in the maintenance and repair of plant operations or equipment; May operate a variety of power driven tools such as saws, mixers, pumps, mowers, drills, etc.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of the operation of medium and heavy motor equipment; Ability to perform manual tasks requiring good hand and eye coordination; Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions; ability to lift heavy weights; Willingness to work out doors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions; Mechanical aptitude.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:
Either:
(A) Three (3) months of experience in the operation of specialized or heavy motor equipment; OR (B) Six (6) months of experience in the operation of medium motor equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a New York State Class D Driver's License at time of appointment. This license must be maintained throughout appointment. Position placement contingent upon pre-employment drug and alcohol screening. -
