Intern - Water Reclamation Facility (WRF) Salary $22.00 Hourly Location Water Reclamation Facility Job Type Intern Job Number 00895 Department Utilities Division Water Reclamation Facility Opening Date 06/08/2026 Closing Date 6/21/2026 11:59 PM Mountain FLSA Non-Exempt Bargaining Unit NR Description Questions Position Summary This position is responsible for learning about wastewater operations at the Water Reclamation Facility. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the Water Reclamation Facility Superintendent or assigned designee, but employees are expected to use their own judgement and take initiative when needed. The majority of the work takes place both indoors and outdoors and may involve different types of terrain, changing weather, and potential exposure to things like hazardous materials or airborne pathogens. Duties and Responsibilities:
Learns about state and Federal regulations affecting water quality and distribution. Learns about facility operations and processes to ensure they are conducted in a safe and efficient manner, and in compliance with Federal rules and regulations. Assists with collecting and conducting tests on water samples in accordance with EPA and State regulations. Helps maintain complete and accurate records of facility operation functions, tests, results, and preventive and corrective maintenance work performed. Learns how to use WRF data management and maintenance software. Helps operate a variety of mechanical gates and valves to regulate the flow of wastewater through various treatment processes to ensure the production of effluent water. Assists with preventive and corrective maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, and repair on equipment, vehicles, and facilities to ensure safe and efficient operation, including welding, fabrication, carpentry, plumbing, and minor electrical repairs. Assists with repairing or rebuilding of City equipment including pumps, electric motors, boilers, compressors, blowers, boilers, turbines, gear reducers, valves, tractors, loaders, graders, lawn mowers, and other related equipment. Helps maintain the interior and exterior of the Treatment Facility in a clean and orderly manner to ensure a safe work environment. Reads manuals, drawings, and specifications as required. Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools, light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment, and vehicles appropriate to the functional area of assignment. Minimum Required Qualifications Candidates must be 18 years of age or older to meet state and federal employment standards. Must be currently enrolled in or recently graduated (within one year) from an accredited college or university degree program in water/wastewater technology, biology, engineering, chemistry, or environmental science, or a closely related field. No prior work experience is required. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language. Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks. Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology. Demonstrates integrity, initiative, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.
