6 months (Temporary) Job Description The Utility Technician is responsible for assisting in the operation, maintenance, and cleanliness of wastewater treatment and recycling facilities. This position supports plant operations by performing a variety of labor, maintenance, and equipment-related tasks to help ensure the safe and efficient treatment of wastewater and production of recycled water. The Utility Technician monitors equipment, assists with routine inspections, performs housekeeping duties, handles materials and supplies, and supports maintenance personnel with repairs and preventive maintenance activities. The role requires adherence to safety regulations, environmental standards, and operating procedures while working both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Assist with the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and recycling equipment. Perform routine inspections of pumps, valves, tanks, pipelines, and other plant systems. Clean and maintain plant facilities, equipment, and work areas. Support maintenance staff with repairs, installations, and preventive maintenance tasks. Collect samples and assist with basic monitoring and testing procedures. Operate hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely and effectively. Load, unload, and transport materials, chemicals, and supplies as needed. Maintain accurate records of completed work and report operational issues to supervisors. Follow all safety policies, environmental regulations, and standard operating procedures. Respond to emergencies and assist with plant operations during off-hours when required. Key Responsibilities (Essential Functions) You will perform routine and heavy-cleaning tasks throughout treatment areas. Work may require Confined Space protocols and Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) practices. Weir Cleaning & Final Stage Debris Removal (1st and 2nd Stage) Remove debris from final treatment areas Scrub algae from walls, pull weeds, and perform pressure washing Confined Space / LOTO may apply Clarifier Tank Cleaning (All Plants) Scrub algae from walls and pressure wash as needed Remove sludge and debris when tanks are drained Confined Space / LOTO may apply Aeration Basins & Settling Tanks / Finals Remove sludge and debris that accumulates at the bottom of tanks and draft tubes when drained Confined Space / LOTO may apply MLSS Channel Cleaning (All Plants) Set stop logs Set up trash pumps to drain channels Remove sludge and debris Confined Space / LOTO may apply Sludge Spills (1st Responder Clean-Up) Respond to and clean up sludge spills as needed Other Duties as Assigned Perform additional tasks necessary to support Treatment Maintenance operations Work Environment / What to Expect This role involves outdoor and industrial work , including pressure washing, scrubbing, debris removal, and pump setup.
Seasonal expectation:
During summer months, Utility Techs may spend approximately 80% of their time on weir cleaning and tank cleaning due to heat and algae bloom.
