Position Overview:
The Seattle Department of Transportation's Maintenance Operations Division presents an exceptional opportunity to join a highly successful team of professionals whose mission is to deliver a safe, reliable, efficient, and socially equitable transportation system that enhances Seattle's environment and economic vitality. Maintenance Operations Division is seeking a qualified Construction & Maintenance Equipment Operator with asphalt experience. The position excavates, installs, maintains, and repairs City facilities and roadways while operating specific types of motorized construction and maintenance equipment and allied attachments. In addition, execute specific instructions and take complete responsibility for the safe operation of heavy construction and maintenance equipment. The position requires application of appropriate guidelines, such as the operating procedures, to the specific equipment used. Knowledge of the operation of construction and maintenance equipment is required, as well as, the ability to operate motorized construction and maintenance equipment and their accessories, and heavy trucks for transporting construction and maintenance equipment. Typical contacts include engineering personnel and employees from Seattle Public Utilities, City Light, Water, Parks, and Fire Departments to discuss jobs, job sites, and utility locations. This position reports to the Street Paving Crew Chief.
Work Hours/Days/Shift:
Monday - Friday 6:30 am to 3:00 pm. Job Responsibilities
  • The work requires practical knowledge of all aspects of asphalt in street construction and repair.
  • Operate backhoe in Right-of-Way (ROW) on street Paving as well as restoration type of work.
  • Operates rollers for Major Asphalt Paving 1 ton and a 3 ton, as well as an 8 to steel wheel ,8 ton rubber tire with knowledge of rolling patterns.
  • Operate front end loaders to move materials, equipment, and supplies as well as load dump trucks.
  • Operate mobile sweepers on our grinding pavement projects.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, and cleans equipment. Checks oil, water, and tire pressure. Washes windows and washes off dirt and grease. Inspect job assignments for overhead obstructions and hazardous conditions.
  • Drive trucks and truck/trailer combinations to and from job sites, or to move materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Ensures that safety measures are observed when loading and unloading material.
  • May be required to act in a lead capacity at job sites where all other activities are secondary to equipment operation.
  • Required to be a working member of the team.
  • Document daily activities, inspections, and accomplishments.
  • Support department goals in promoting race, diversity, and social justice.

Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
One-year experience in heavy equipment operation with maintenance or completion of a recognized course in construction and maintenance equipment operation, including practical operating experience and instruction in mechanical principles and general construction and maintenance procedures.
OR:
An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience operating Asphalt Paving rollers 1 ton,3 ton and 8 ton both steel & rubber tire.
  • Experience operating Backhoes in regard to paving.
  • Experience operating mechanical and regenerative mobile sweepers preferred.
  • Experience driving truck and trailer with equipment loaded a plus.
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to dealing with all issues and people fairly, consistently, and equitably.
  • Knowledge of state and federal safety regulations.
  • Good work history and positive attendance.
  • Ability to be flexible within a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to effectively work in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse customer base.
  • Demonstrates safety knowledge.
Work Environment /
Physical Demands:
  • Works outdoors in all weather.
  • Exposed to dust, dirt, high noise levels, diesel and gas fumes, and engine exhaust.
  • Moderate physical exertion required to operate equipment.
  • Standing, bending, stooping, and lifting in excess of 50 pounds sometimes required.
License, Certification, and Other Requirements:
  • Current Washington State Commercial Class A driver's license with the Air Brake restriction removed.
  • Full driver abstract. (Will be required at the interview).
  • Any relevant certifications regarding heavy equipment operation (ex: Graduation cert from a training facility).
