Qualifications:
Education:
e.g., High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience working with children or in a school setting is highly desirable. CPR/First Aid certification.
Knowledge, SkillsAbilities:
The Cafeteria Monitor is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive environment for students during meal service periods. The ideal candidate will possess a calm demeanor, strong communication skills, and a genuine interest in students' well-being and safety.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Supervision:
Actively monitor student behavior, ensuring compliance with school rules and fostering a respectful environment.
Student Support:
Assist students with daily lunch tasks, including opening containers and managing dietary-related concerns.
SafetyCompliance:
Monitor for potential hazards (spills, conflicts, safety breaches) and act as a first-line responder during minor incidents or emergencies.
Environmental Maintenance:
Ensure tables and eating areas are clean and sanitized between student groups.
Communication:
Coordinate with school staff to promptly report behavioral or facility-related issues.
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Safety and Surveillance:
Two-way radios are crucial for immediate communication with administration or security. Monitors wear high-visibility vests to be easily identified by students.
Student ManagementAttendance:
Many use handheld tablets or laptops linked to school management systems.
Cleaning and Safety Tools:
Wet floor signs, caution tape, and cleaning kits (rags, spray, paper towels) are necessary for quickly handling spills and preventing accidents.
Monitoring and Supervision:
Megaphones may be used in large, noisy cafeterias to make announcements.
Log Books:
Incident reports or log books are used to record any fights, injuries, or significant issues.
Posture:
Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods Frequent bending, kneeling, and sitting on the floor
Motion:
Ability to stand, walk, and move for extended periods Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
Lifting:
Must be able to stand/walk for the duration of the shift, lift up to 35-50 lbs, and perform bending/reaching activities to maintain cleanliness.
Environment:
This position operates in a school cafeteria setting. The environment is frequently loud, fast-paced, and requires consistent movement. Exposure to cleaning agents and common school-related allergens may occur.
Mental Demands:
Must maintain composure in a high-noise, high-energy environment; demonstrate patience and fairness; and exercise sound judgment in de-escalating student conflicts.
