The Nyumburu Cultural Center has served the university's community since 1971 and continues to build on its foundations as the center for social, cultural, and intellectual interaction. In carrying out its mission, the Nyumburu Cultural Center strives to improve these students' retention and graduation rates. The Nyumburu Cultural Center is an excellent place for cultural exchange, intersectionality, and collaborations, enabling the University of Maryland to make greater strides in achieving genuine cultural pluralism. The Nyumburu Cultural Center hosts Camp Shule every summer, providing 2nd-grade through 12th-grade students an opportunity to explore academic, artistic, and athletic interests in a relaxed and creative environment. Camp Shule combines fun, friendships, and adventure of camp with the excitement of intellectual inquiry and discovery. Camp Shule provides an opportunity for youth to explore academic, artistic, and athletic interests in a relaxed and creative environment. Camp Shule encourages a life-long, love-of-learning with a combination of the best aspects of traditional camps, close friendships, activities, and adventure with an element of intellectual inquiry and exploration. Camp Shule is based on the fundamental belief that children are good-decision makers, and make choices about their daily schedules, which builds self-confidence, independence, and maturity. Camp Shule Summer 2026: 8 Weeks starting Monday, June 15, 2026 through Friday, August 7, 2026. Camp Shule counselors are responsible for classroom instruction, workshop facilitation, and grade/age-based supervision. Counselors co-plan, teach, coordinate, and carry out daily recreational activities according to the camp schedule. Counselors are expected to chaperone campers on field trips and monitor students on bathroom and lunch breaks. Counselors report directly to the head counselor, director, and/or associate director. Responsibilities and duties include the following: Complete all requested and required training and background checks for a summer camp counselor, as needed. Attend all required meetings as requested. Supervise and engage campers of various grade levels (e.g.,Warriors:
2nd grade;Trailblazers:
3rd & 4th;Explorers:
5th & 6th;Navigators:
7th to 10th), ensuring their safety, development, growth, skill achievement, and general well-being. Monitor and teach campers during daily activities (e.g., math, reading/writing, vocabulary, field trips, morning affirmations, computers, stepping, games, etc.). Maintain a schedule for camp participants and facilitate lesson plans for daily activities. Transport campers to daily and weekly activities (e.g., Terp Zone, swimming, basketball/softball, scavenger hunts/ice cream outings, etc.). Maintain constant monitoring and surveillance of the area (including, but not limited to, the pool). Assist with the setup and breakdown of rooms and spaces, assist with the sign-in and sign-out of campers, and ensure the cleanliness of the site. Maintain accurate program records, including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance. Know and understand all emergency procedures associated with the camp program. Mediate and report all camper disputes to the Nyumburu Cultural Center leadership staff as soon as possible. Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the camp program, including knowing the whereabouts of your campers at all times. Report all potential issues, emergencies, and incidents to the leadership team at the Nyumburu Cultural Center immediately. Perform other duties as assigned.Preferences:
Experience:
One year of experience in education, camp, youth programs, recreation, working with children, or related fields.Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Working knowledge of information technology applications. Ability to make effective and timely decisions. Excellent communication skills, including writing, editing, and speaking. Excellent interpersonal skills and time management skills. Ability to organize and interpret information and data. Ability to manage projects and events under competing deadlines and priorities. Ability to work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others University experience is preferred. Availability to work a flexible schedule. Passion for supporting marginalized and historically underrepresented student populations and community members.Licenses/ Certifications:
None Physical demands: Sedentary work performed in an office environment. Regularly required to travel to meetings, events, etc. both on and off campus. Ability to travel both domestic and international. Regularly required to communicate and exchange information and to use technology/devices. Ability to attend events, meetings, trainings after normal business hours. Regularly required to transport materials for events. Regularly required to assist in the setup or breakdown of an event. Ability to manage multiple priorities and competing demands.Additional Information:
There are ten (10) temporary employment positions available. Hourly rate is $19.00 per hour. Camp Counselors work a rotating schedule.Shifts are as follows:
7am to 4pm 8am to 5pm 9am to 6pm Candidates must be able to provide proof of eligibility to work in the USA. No visa sponsorship is offered for this position.Required Applicant Materials:
