Job Description
The Wrangler is responsible for assisting with the daily operation of the YMCA camp horse program while creating a safe, positive, and engaging experience for campers. This position supports riding instruction, horse care, trail rides, and overall barn operations while ensuring the safety and well-being of both campers and horses. Why Work at Camp Abe Lincoln? What You'll Do:
Assist with the daily care and management of camp horses, including feeding, watering, grooming, turnout, and stall/barn cleaning. Help lead and supervise horseback riding activities, lessons, and trail rides for campers. Monitor camper and horse safety at all times and enforce established safety procedures. Assist campers with mounting, dismounting, and basic riding instruction. Ensure tack, equipment, and riding areas are clean, organized, and properly maintained. Observe horses for signs of illness, injury, or behavioral concerns and communicate issues to leadership. Support the overall camp experience by participating in camp activities, special events, and team responsibilities as assigned. Maintain a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment for campers, staff, and volunteers. Follow all YMCA policies, procedures, and risk management guidelines. What We're Looking For Experience working with horses and basic horse care knowledge required. Previous experience working with children or in a camp/recreational setting preferred. Ability to safely handle horses and assist with riding activities. Strong communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Must be dependable, flexible, and able to maintain a positive attitude. Current First Aid/CPR certifications preferred or ability to obtain upon hire. Ability to walk, stand, bend, lift, and work outdoors for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry tack, feed, and equipment up to 50 pounds.
