Job Description
SUMMARY Under limited supervision, the Captain/Fire Inspector is responsible for providing direction and education to the public and firefighters by means of fire prevention, plan review, inspection, investigation, and reporting.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Enforces state and local fire prevention codes, including reviewing new commercial construction and remodeling plans; inspecting new commercial structures (and, single-family residential structures, as requested); inspecting existing commercial structures annually; researching and interpreting codes; and maintaining related records. Meets and/or communicates with property owners, civil engineers, architects, general contractors, and other construction personnel regarding compliance problems; interprets and explains state of local fire codes; and periodically initiates appropriate legal action for non-compliance. Responds to emergencies as needed for items including (but not limited to), inspecting for fire code violations, completing investigations, taking photographs, assisting with ICS command structure, maintaining communication with personnel, assisting with fire suppression activities, assisting with emergency medical care, etc. Oversees and/or conducts investigations of fire cause and origin determinations, while coordinating with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. Maintains current knowledge of local, state, and federal fire codes by reading professional publications and periodically attending seminars, as required or as needed. Schedules and presents programs pertaining to fire safe behaviors, fire prevention measures, and life safety education, based upon behavioral objectives, including, but not limited to the following: Programs within schools, day cares, pre-schools, and senior citizen facilities as well as assisting local businesses with fire safety education and evacuation planning. Performs various administrative duties, including answering telephones; typing and preparing correspondence, inspection and other reports; and entering data on computer. Provide periodic reports to the Fire Chief for review. Assist in overall department planning through proposal of long-term plans and budget needs.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Possess a valid Indiana driver's license. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Must hold or have the ability to obtain Indiana Fire Inspector I certification within one (1) year of employment. Must hold or have the ability to obtain Indiana Fire Investigator certifications within one (1) year of employment Ability to obtain ICC Fire Plans Examiner certification within two (2) years of employment. Must hold current/active CPR certification Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with peers, superiors, other Township departments, subordinates, vendors, contractors, external government agencies and organizations. Strong communication skills, both orally and in writing.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Maintain knowledge of Wabash Township Fire Department's Standard Operating Procedures/Guidelines. Possess excellent time management skills, communication skills, and leadership skills that enhance efficiency. Ability to work on an on-call basis in addition to scheduled work shifts. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Appropriate knowledge of all software used by the organization including, but not limited to the following: MS Windows, MS Office Suite, ESO, ActiveAlert, and Adobe Reader.WORKING CONDITIONS
Works and responds rapidly in all weather conditions. Operates out of a firehouse where staff sleep, eat, train, and remain on duty during shifts that last 24 hours. Work in various indoor settings, including living quarters and office areas Hazardous tasks performed under emergency conditions may require strenuous exertion under such handicaps as: Limited visibility, Exposure to hazardous or toxic chemicals or gases, Extremes in temperatures, Cramped surroundings, etc. Contact with death, emotional stress, trauma, contagious disease and terminal illness. May be required to communicate clearly in noisy and stressful situations.PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS
Works and responds rapidly in all weather conditions. Wears prescribed uniform which includes, during emergency operations, personal protective equipment which may weigh up to 50 pounds. Works in stressful/dangerous situations that are physically and mentally demanding. Requires awareness of safety for self and others.DISCLAIMERS
