Job Description

In Tennessee, a CDC Teacher (K-4) is a special education teacher who works in a Comprehensive Development Classroom (CDC), a self-contained environment for students with significant disabilities. The job requires a valid Tennessee teaching license with a Special Education Comprehensive endorsement. The specific job description can vary by district, but typical duties include: Job duties and responsibilities Instructional planning : Develop and implement specialized academic and physical education lessons, activities, and curricula to address students' individual needs, abilities, and learning levels. This includes managing daily classroom operations. Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) : Create, implement, and monitor compliant and high-quality IEPs for a caseload of students with a wide range of disabilities. Assessment and evaluation : Administer diagnostic and academic tests and collect data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction. Behavior management : Establish and maintain a positive classroom environment, develop and implement behavior modification plans, and use behavior strategies to meet student needs.
Collaboration :
Communicate and coordinate with parents, general education teachers, related services staff (such as therapists), and school administrators.
Record-keeping :
Keep complete and accurate special education files and records in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws and policies. Crisis management : Participate in training for de-escalation and physical intervention techniques as needed. Professional development : Attend professional meetings, workshops, and conferences to stay current on special education best practices.
Supervision :
Train and supervise educational assistants who support students in the classroom. Required qualifications A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in education or a related field. A valid Tennessee Teaching Certificate with a Special Education Comprehensive K-12 endorsement (code 461). Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. Successful prior teaching experience in a special education setting is often preferred. A willingness to receive training in physical intervention and verbal de-escalation is often necessary. Must pass a required background check.
