Job Description
The Russell County Hospital, on behalf of the Russell County Sheriff's Department, is seeking a dedicated and professional Full-Time Career Law Enforcement Officer to be assigned to Russell County Hospital . This position is designed to strengthen public safety, reduce crime, and support community policing efforts within a critical healthcare environment through a visible and proactive law enforcement presence . This position is funded through the U.S. Department of Justice - Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program for 36 months with a potential 12-month extension . Key Responsibilities Maintain a visible law enforcement and security presence at Russell County Hospital Respond to incidents, disturbances, and emergencies on the hospital campus Enforce applicable local, state, and federal laws Assist hospital staff with safety concerns, crisis response, and de-escalation Complete incident reports and required documentation in compliance with departmental and grant standards Coordinate with hospital administration, EMS, and other public safety agencies Participate in community-oriented policing efforts within the healthcare setting Maintain a professional, calm, and compassionate approach appropriate for a hospital environment Minimum Qualifications Certified Law Enforcement Officer in the Commonwealth of Kentucky Valid Kentucky Driver's License Must meet all employment requirements of the Russell County Sheriff's Department Ability to maintain required annual training through KY DOCJT and Russell County Hospital Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays as assigned Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with hospital staff and other agencies Preferred Qualifications Experience in hospital, school, or facility-based law enforcement (preferred but not required) Veterans with law enforcement certification are encouraged to apply Training or experience in crisis intervention, de-escalation, or community policing Physical & Mental Requirements Qualified candidates must be able to perform essential law enforcement functions including: Standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, and running short distances as required Lifting or carrying up to 50 pounds , with or without assistance Physically restraining individuals using approved law enforcement techniques Maintaining emotional stability and sound judgment during high-stress or emergency situations Interacting professionally and compassionately with individuals experiencing mental health crises, substance impairment, or emotional distress Supervision & Chain of Command The officer assigned to Russell County Hospital will remain a sworn deputy under the authority and command of the Russell County Sheriff's Department . For day-to-day operations related to hospital security, the officer will coordinate with the Hospital Administrator or designee for scheduling, facility access, and site-specific operations. All law enforcement authority, investigations, discipline, and training remain under the Sheriff's Department. Salary & Benefits Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and provided in accordance with Russell County personnel policies and applicable grant guidelines . Grant Compliance This position is funded through the COPS Hiring Program and is subject to all grant requirements, including compliance with reporting and retention provisions. Continued employment is contingent upon grant funding and satisfactory job performance .
