Director of Special Education or designated supervisor Position Summary A Paraeducator assists classroom teachers in the care and instruction of students. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists in the instruction, development and maintenance of academic readiness, self-management, language and communication skills, motor development, play, leisure and recreational skills, daily living skills and social skills. Assists in implementing and maintaining a behavior management system by monitoring and recording children's behavior and providing appropriate reinforcement for consequences. These activities are conducted using guidelines established by the teacher. Creates a positive and supportive learning environment, which encourages independence and stresses process rather than product. Uses various materials and activities to develop appropriate skills. Assists on field trips, and monitors playground activities. Monitors students' health conditions. Assists with the diapering, toileting, washing, dressing and feeding of students. Prepares classroom materials, such as notebooks, snacks, and art projects. Assembles bulletin boards. Assists with unloading and loading students off and on busses. Assists with preparing and carrying out lesson plans. Attends appropriate staff meetings and professional development. Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with all staff, families, local districts and community agencies. Provides verbal and written progress reports, and completes the appropriate documentation and paperwork. Maintains a clean and organized environment. Performs related work as requested. Qualification Requirements High school diploma or its equivalent. Satisfaction of No Child Left Behind requirements for a highly qualified paraeducator, if applicable. Ability to read at a minimum of the equivalent of a fifth grade level. Considerable working knowledge of child care and development practices and principles. Have completed or be willing to participate in CPI training. Possess sensitivity to and interest in the needs of individuals with disabilities. Effective verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively work with students, parents, staff, other agencies and the general public. Ability to read and/or use electronic mail. Physical Demands and Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk, see and hear. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds. Some travel may be required. Noise levels can be moderate to high.
