Job Description

Category Schools - Orientation and Mobility Specialist Job Type Contract A contracted opportunity is available for an experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist to support students in a school setting for the 2026-2027 academic year. This position provides an exciting environment to help students develop independence and confidence through orientation and mobility instruction. Situated near Kansas City, KS, you'll play a key role in fostering safe travel skills for students with visual impairments.
Key Qualifications:
Current certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) Experience providing O&M services in educational environments preferred Strong communication skills for collaboration with teachers, staff, and families Adaptable and patient approach to student needs and differing developmental levels Ability to conduct assessments and develop individualized service plans Detail-oriented documentation and progress tracking
Primary Responsibilities:
Travel to student locations within the district to deliver orientation and mobility training Conduct functional mobility assessments and develop measurable student goals Teach orientation skills, including cane use and route planning, tailored to each student's needs Consult with educators and IEP teams to support classroom integration Monitor progress and maintain accurate documentation in compliance with state and district guidelines Provide recommendations for environmental modifications and assistive technology Stay updated on best practices and continuing education for O&M This contract runs from August 2026 through May 2027, aligning with the academic calendar.
