Job Description

Job Description Overview Atlantic Health, one of New Jersey's largest non-profit healthcare networks, is seeking an experienced physician leader to serve as Chief Medical Officer (CMO) at Atlantic Health Overlook Medical Center (AHOMC) in Summit, NJ. The CMO will serve as a key member of Atlantic Health's senior leadership team and executive leadership of the medical center. They will provide clinical leadership, expertise, and perspective to the senior and executive leadership team as well as the medical staff and other team members across the organization. In addition to providing leadership and expertise in support of clinical activities and clinical quality, the CMO will play an important role in the development and execution of business strategies that will support the accomplishment of goals of AH across the enterprise. The CMO will promote shared accountability between physicians and the system for the benefit of patients, providers, and the community. The successful candidate will serve as a liaison and advocate to create long-term collaborations and relationships between the medical staff, AHOMC and Atlantic Health leadership and the board of directors. The role includes maintaining a high level of clinical credibility within the medical center with all stakeholders. The CMO will report to the Senior Vice President, AH/President, AHOMC, as well as the EVP, Chief Medical Officer, AH. Execute on Clinical Excellence Achieve and sustain Vizient Five-Star Rating Drive sustained top-decile national performance in mortality, complications, efficiency, and patient safety metrics. Establish hospital-based medicine as a high-reliability clinical enterprise with standardized, evidence-based care pathways. Ensure the continued rating as a Leapfrog "A" safety grade medical center through systematic harm reduction and safety leadership. Leverage Vizient and internal analytics to enable real-time performance monitoring and clinician-led improvement. Lead clinical effectiveness initiatives that reduce unwarranted variation, waste, and total cost of care. 2. Deliver an Extraordinary Consumer Experience Deliver consistently exceptional patient and family experiences comparable to top-performing national health systems. Standardize inpatient communication, care coordination, and discharge processes to improve transitions of care. Reduce avoidable readmissions and improve patient understanding and engagement. Integrate palliative and hospice services into inpatient care models to ensure goal-concordant care. 3. Elevate Workforce Experience & Succession Planning Build a highly engaged, high-performing physician and APP workforce Establish leadership development pathways and succession plans for key clinical and administrative roles. Standardize physician leadership expectations, performance metrics, and accountability structures. Improve clinician engagement, retention, and well-being through operational excellence and inclusive leadership. 4. Drive Sustainable Growth Lead strategic growth and maturation of hospital-based medicine programs aligned with system priorities. Expand advanced inpatient care models including ICU, Neuro-ICU and CCU optimization, specialty consult services, and coverage models. Strengthen integration across inpatient, ambulatory, post-acute, palliative, and hospice care settings. Support system and regional network growth through scalable, standardized hospital-based care models. 5. Financial Stewardship Deliver top-decile financial performance consistent with national benchmarks for efficiency and value. Accountable for budget development, resource allocation, and productivity optimization. Reduce observed-to-expected length of stay and optimize utilization, especially within ICU, Neuro-ICU, CCU and intermediate care settings. Translate clinical effectiveness initiatives into measurable cost savings and margin protection. Leadership Expectations Lead with a system-first mindset, prioritizing enterprise outcomes and balancing local optimization and contributions. Model transparency, accountability, and continuous improvement. Serve as a trusted strategic advisor to executive leadership on hospital-based clinical performance. Uphold and model Atlantic Health's mission, values, and commitment to excellence. Lead authentically with an emphasis on developing relationships as well as getting the work done
Salary Range:
$525,000-$715,000 base salary only; excludes leadership incentive. Qualifications MD or DO with board certification in a relevant specialty. Advanced degree or formal leadership training (MBA, MHA, MPH, or equivalent) preferred. D emonstrated senior physician leadership experience in hospital-based medicine or related enterprise roles. Strong clinical leader with experience of driving improvements in quality and safety Deep understanding of Vizient, CMS, Leapfrog, and value-based care frameworks. Strong collaborative leadership and executive communication skills. High comfort level managing a combination of employed and voluntary staff All candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of New Jersey 10+ years' experience in senior clinical leadership - ideally as CMO, Associate CMO or Chairperson of a large department Experience within an academic setting is strongly preferred. Track record of physician workforce development and succession planning
