Position Overview Recovery House, Inc. is seeking a mission‑driven Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a strategic and operational leader during an important period of organizational growth and refinement. The COO partners closely with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to translate vision into daily practice, ensuring that operations across the organization are aligned, sustainable, and responsive to the needs of clients and staff. This role is ideal for a leader who sees operational excellence as a form of care—someone who understands that clarity, accountability, and well‑supported teams create the conditions for recovery, resilience, and long‑term impact. In the absence of the CEO, the COO assumes full responsibility for organizational leadership. All department leaders report to the COO, while medical and clinical decisions remain within the appropriate professional domains. Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership & Organizational Effectiveness Ensure the organization operates with consistency, predictability, and responsiveness so staff can focus fully on high‑quality client care Lead and support department heads through regular leadership meetings, individual consultation, and direct observation of daily operations Strengthen organizational structure, systems, and workflows to support stability, replicability, and long‑term sustainability Strategic Planning & Resource Management Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and CFO in shaping and executing organizational priorities Align resources, staffing, and operational capacity with client census and programmatic needs Translate strategic goals into actionable operational plans across departments Culture, Communication & Staff Support Foster a transparent, collaborative, and accountable organizational culture rooted in respect and shared mission Lead internal communication efforts to ensure clarity, alignment, and trust across teams Partner with the Human Resources Director to support recruitment, retention, staff wellness, and positive workplace culture Quality Assurance, Compliance & Risk Management Maintain oversight of organizational quality standards and ensure compliance with all applicable legal, regulatory, and ethical requirements Support the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and process improvements Lead crisis response and problem‑solving efforts to maintain organizational stability and continuity of care Data‑Informed Decision Making Oversee the collection and analysis of operational and outcomes data Use data to assess performance, inform decision‑making, support continuous improvement, and report to stakeholders External Relationships & Organizational Representation Represent Recovery House, Inc. with community partners, funders, and external stakeholders Build and maintain collaborative relationships that advance the organization's mission and strategic goals Growth & Project Leadership Lead and support the development and implementation of new programs, initiatives, and organizational improvements Ensure projects align with mission, values, and long‑term sustainability Other Duties Carry out additional responsibilities as assigned by the CEO, with a focus on operational leadership and strategic advancement Opportunity for Impact The COO role offers a unique opportunity to: Strengthen and scale services that directly support individuals in recovery Build operational systems that sustain compassionate, high‑quality care Shape organizational culture and leadership practices Contribute meaningfully to improving access to substance use treatment in Vermont Minimum Qualifications Education Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Management, or a related field required MBA or advanced degree preferred Experience Minimum of 5 years of management or leadership experience Experience in mission‑driven, nonprofit, healthcare, behavioral health, or human services organizations strongly preferred Skills & Competencies Proven ability to lead complex operations and drive organizational improvement Strong leadership presence with a collaborative, values‑aligned approach Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills Experience managing cross‑functional teams and supporting leaders Understanding of quality standards, compliance requirements, and ethical leadership Comfort using data to guide decision‑making and measure outcomes Leadership Values The successful COO will be a leader who: Leads with integrity, humility, and accountability Balances compassion with clear expectations Recognizes that staff well‑being and client outcomes are deeply connected Is committed to equity, dignity, and ethical decision‑making Finds purpose in building systems that support healing and hope Join Us This role is well‑suited for a leader who believes that strong systems and compassionate care go hand in hand.
