Location Bronson Battle Creek (BBC) Title Child Life Specialist - ED/Surgery - Full Time Sign-On Bonus Available Role Overview The Child Life Specialist plays a vital role in supporting the developmental and emotional well-being of children, adolescents, and their families during healthcare experiences. This position focuses on helping patients cope with medical treatments, reducing stress and trauma, and maintaining normal childhood routines. As an essential member of the healthcare team, the Child Life Specialist fosters an environment that encourages play, learning, self-expression, family involvement, and positive coping. This role ensures continuity of care while addressing the psychosocial needs of pediatric patients in both the Emergency Department and Surgical settings.
Required Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's degree in Child Life, Child Development, Education, or a related field
Internship:
Completion of an internship under a
Certified Child Life Specialist Certification:
Eligibility for Child Life Certification upon hire Certification from the Child Life Certification Commission (CLCC) required within 18 months At least two exam attempts required within the first year
Technical Skills:
Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with patient charting systems
Medical Knowledge:
Working knowledge of medical terminology, diagnoses, tests, and procedures in pediatric care
Communication:
Strong verbal and written communication; ability to connect with patients, families, and healthcare teams
Customer Service:
Demonstrates compassionate, responsive support for patients and families
Critical Thinking:
Ability to assess patient needs and provide appropriate interventions Key ResponsibilitiesProgram Development & Implementation Design and facilitate developmentally appropriate activities to support cognitive, emotional, and social growth Create supportive therapeutic experiences tailored to each patient's needs Patient & Family Support Prepare patients and families for procedures and hospital experiences Provide coping strategies to reduce anxiety, fear, and stress Play & Developmental Support Maintain a safe and engaging playroom environment Develop materials, activities, and visual tools (such as bulletin boards) that encourage healthy expression Interdisciplinary Collaboration Partner with nurses, physicians, and allied health teams to address psychosocial needs Ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient support Documentation & Reporting Gather and document relevant patient observations Report developmental and psychosocial insights to care teams Mentorship & Training Support and guide students and volunteers within the Child Life Program Physical Demands Frequent standing and walking Occasional lifting of up to 20 pounds Assisting in moving or supporting patients as needed Visual/mental fatigue during administrative work and charting Work Environment Fast-paced, collaborative pediatric care setting Requires adaptability and strong multitasking skills Involves close teamwork with interdisciplinary partners to ensure patient well-being Additional Skills Strong interviewing and problem-solving abilities Ability to remain positive, flexible, and supportive during rapidly changing situations
