Job Title:
CNC Machinist Job Description The CNC Machinist performs precision CNC operations, including set-up, operation, and in-process inspection of parts on vertical, horizontal, and lathe CNC machines. This role supports both individual and team machining activities by setting up equipment, verifying quality, and editing or retrieving CNC programs to ensure accurate and efficient production. Responsibilities Set up vertical, horizontal, and lathe CNC machines, including mills, lathes, and Mazak equipment, according to process sheets and job requirements. Perform CNC machine changeovers and prepare machines for new jobs to maintain efficient production flow. Operate CNC machines by following process sheets, drawings, specifications, and other required documentation. Inspect own parts using hand tools such as calipers, micrometers, drop gauges, pin gauges, height gauges, and indicators in accordance with in-process inspection requirements. Read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality specifications. Edit and retrieve CNC programs from system files as needed to support production and ensure correct machining operations. Calculate machining requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry to prove and validate part programs. Perform offsets, compensations, and apply conditional switches to maintain tight tolerances and part accuracy. Inspect and verify work prior to submitting parts for final inspection to ensure conformance to specifications. Identify non-conforming parts and process them according to established non-conforming material procedures. Troubleshoot machining issues and make appropriate adjustments to tooling, programs, or machine settings to resolve problems. Support other machinists and team members by assisting with set-ups, quality checks, and machine operations as needed. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in alignment with company standards and safety practices. Essential Skills Proficiency in setting up and operating CNC machines, including vertical, horizontal, and lathe CNC equipment. Hands-on experience with CNC lathes, mills, and Mazak machines. Ability to perform CNC set-ups and machine changeovers independently. Strong blueprint reading skills and the ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications. Ability to operate and monitor CNC machines while following process sheets and related documentation. Experience using inspection tools such as calipers, micrometers, drop gauges, pin gauges, height gauges, and indicators. Capability to edit and retrieve CNC programs from system files to support machining operations. Skill in performing offsets, compensations, and using conditional switches on CNC controls. Ability to calculate machining requirements using basic math, geometry, and trigonometry. Competence in proving part programs and validating machining processes before and during production. Attention to detail in inspecting and verifying work prior to formal inspection. Ability to follow non-conforming material procedures when parts do not meet specifications. Troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve machining and quality issues. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with Swiss-style CNC machines is a plus. Previous experience in precision machining environments is beneficial. Familiarity with programming CNC machines beyond basic program edits is advantageous. Work Environment This role operates in a clean, well-lit, and temperature-controlled precision manufacturing facility. Work is organized into two primary shifts: a 1st shift from 5:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and a 2nd shift from 3:30 p.m. to midnight, Monday through Friday. Employees receive a 45-minute lunch break, with 30 minutes paid. The environment includes CNC mills, lathes, Mazak machines, and related inspection equipment such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and indicators. The workplace emphasizes safety, organization, and professionalism, with expectations to maintain a tidy work area and follow established procedures throughout each shift. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Loves Park, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
