    Composite Mechanic
  • Job Description
  • The Composite Mechanic fabricates, assembles, forms, finishes, and inspects a wide variety of structural and non-structural fiberglass, acrylic, composite, and metal parts, tools, and assemblies.
This role works from engineering drawings, process specifications, quality control requirements, and established procedures to ensure the timely delivery of high-quality products. The position involves multi-tasking, operating multiple machines where applicable, and supporting continuous product flow within a manufacturing environment.
  • Responsibilities
  • + Fabricate, assemble, form, finish, and inspect composite, fiberglass, acrylic, and metal parts, tools, and assemblies in accordance with engineering and quality requirements.
+ Work from drawings, documents, process specifications, quality control requirements, and established procedures to complete assignments accurately and on time. + Utilize lay-up tools, including both optical and hard tools, to support the fabrication of composite and metal assemblies. + Obtain required information from prints, charts, sketches, work orders, documents, and verbal or electronic instructions to plan and perform work. + Apply shop mathematics and use precision measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances. + Verify that all work performed follows work instructions and meets applicable process and engineering specifications. + Ensure that equipment and tooling are properly certified and maintained in accordance with established procedures. + Use and control solvents and cleaning solutions to prepare details, tools, and assemblies for bonding and painting following established procedures. + Perform routine minor machine maintenance, such as replacing filters, changing standard lightbulbs on machines and equipment, and maintaining lubrication and coolant levels as part of basic preventive maintenance duties. + Routinely move product within the immediate manufacturing work area using assigned shop equipment and complete required system transactions to move product to the next operation. + On an exception basis, move product to the next operation within the building while maintaining accurate documentation. + Support the continuous flow of product through the manufacturing process by training and assisting employees at all classification levels. + Cross-train in inspection activities and obtain SIA qualification as required. + Place vacuum and pressure bags over and inside wrapped parts and tools, and test for leaks to ensure proper sealing. + Cut fabrics and composite materials to size using knives, shears, and automated material cutting equipment. + Hand finish and machine finish parts to required tolerances and fit them into completed assemblies. + Drill, saw, file, sand, pot, patch, build up, trim, fit, and rivet parts to meet production and assembly requirements. + Prepare, polish, and maintain molds and bonding assembly tools to obtain smooth, high-quality surfaces. + Load, unload, and operate ovens for the curing of parts and assemblies according to specified parameters. + Apply parting agents to molds and bonding assembly tools to support the lay-up and curing processes. + Mix and apply bonding adhesives to details and assemblies using methods such as films, spray, pour coating, roller coating, and robotics equipment. + Spray and brush primer onto parts and assemblies as required. + Maintain any required clearance and adhere to all security, safety, and quality procedures. + Work flexibly on 2nd or 3rd shift and participate in mandatory overtime, including some weekends, as needed to meet production demands.
  • Essential Skills
  • + Hands-on experience working with composite materials, including fiberglass, acrylic, and other advanced composites.
+ Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, work orders, charts, and process specifications. + Proficiency in using lay-up tools, including optical and hard tools, for composite and metal assembly fabrication. + Strong shop mathematics skills to calculate dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements. + Experience using precision measuring instruments to verify part dimensions and quality. + Ability to follow detailed work instructions and confirm compliance with process and engineering specifications. + Experience using solvents and cleaning solutions safely for preparation of parts, tools, and assemblies. + Capability to perform routine minor machine maintenance, including filter replacement, basic lighting changes, and monitoring lubrication and coolant levels. + Skill in operating material handling equipment to move products within the manufacturing area and complete associated system transactions. + Experience cutting fabrics and composite materials using knives, shears, and automated cutting equipment. + Ability to hand finish and machine finish parts to tight tolerances and assemble them into completed structures. + Proficiency in drilling, sawing, filing, sanding, potting, patching, building up, trimming, fitting, and riveting parts. + Experience preparing and polishing molds and bonding tools to achieve smooth surfaces. + Knowledge of oven operation for curing composite parts and assemblies. + Ability to apply parting agents, bonding adhesives, and primers using various methods including spray, pour coating, roller coating, and robotics equipment. + Willingness and ability to work 2nd or 3rd shift. + Willingness to work mandatory overtime, including some weekends, to meet production schedules.
  • Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • + Experience in aircraft or aerospace manufacturing environments, particularly with composite structures.
+ Familiarity with epoxy systems and other composite bonding materials. + Background in assembly work involving composite materials and metal structures. + Experience with automated material cutters and robotics equipment for adhesive application. + Prior exposure to inspection activities and interest in becoming SIA qualified. + Ability to train and assist colleagues at various skill levels to support continuous product flow.

The role involves standing for extended periods, performing hands-on fabrication and assembly tasks, and moving product within the work area using assigned shop equipment. Shifts are typically on 2nd or 3rd shift, and the schedule includes mandatory overtime, including some weekends, to meet production needs. The environment emphasizes safety, adherence to procedures, and proper handling of solvents, cleaning solutions, and other production materials.

  • Pay and Benefits
  • The pay range for this position is $45.00 - $45.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your jobclassification and length of employment.
