(ATSS) The American Foundation for Donation and Transplantation (AFDT) is the continuation of one of the oldest transplantation and donation professional organizations in the United States. Founded in 1969 in Richmond, Virginia as SEROPP by Drs. David Hume and Bernard Amos, AFDT continues to support scientific and educational activities related to donation and transplantation, benefiting patients, living donors, donor families, and the transplant community. The American Transplant Support Services, Inc. (ATSS), a procurement billing service, facilitates organ donation and transplantation by providing billing and reimbursement support to transplant centers and organ procurement organizations. ATSS helps create consistency, accountability, and predictability in the reimbursement of organ and tissue procurement costs. The Controller will report directly to the Executive Director and supervise the Accountant. This is strictly an in-office position.
Position Summary:
The Controller is a working manager responsible for supporting and overseeing the day-to-day financial operations of AFDT and ATSS, including accounting, billing support, receivables, payables, payroll, reconciliations, budgeting, compliance, documentation, and financial reporting. This role requires someone who is comfortable working in the details while also improving the broader financial process. The ideal candidate will be accountable, hands-on, organized, and willing to strengthen processes through documentation, reconciliation, follow-through, and clear communication. The Controller must be able to manage recurring financial activities, identify discrepancies, resolve outstanding items, support collections, and provide reliable financial information to the Executive Director, Boards of Directors, and other key stakeholders. Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the day-to-day financial operations of the organization, including accounting, billing support, payables, receivables, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare annual budgets and support ongoing budget monitoring.
  • Manage revenue activity received through ACH payments and checks.
  • Review cash receipt activity, payment postings, ACH/check documentation, and supporting records for accuracy.
  • Assist with invoicing, payables, receivables, invoice pulls, filing, and related accounting documentation as needed.
  • Review, reconcile, and resolve discrepancies related to organ accounts, bank statements, batches, receivables, payables, and other financial activity.
  • Balance and post accounting and invoice/AP batches accurately and timely while maintaining related documentation.
  • Sign and process checks and ACHs in accordance with internal controls and approval procedures.
  • Support collection efforts by reviewing outstanding balances, researching discrepancies, documenting follow-up, and communicating with external entities as needed.
  • Support vouchers, reimbursements, receipt posting review, and other recurring accounting transactions.
  • Assist the Accountant with daily accounting tasks when needed.
  • Receive input from the Executive Director, Administrative Director, and Director of Operations on budget preparation.
  • Participate in strategic planning and organizational planning discussions.
  • Support operational finance functions, including payroll, compliance data requests, audits, insurance administration, and flex spending account management.
  • Monitor accounting inboxes, online banking activity, and related financial communications to ensure timely follow-up.
  • Support administrative finance workflows, including invoice distribution, documentation, reimbursements, and related follow-up.
  • Manage insurance-related items, including AD&D, health, life insurance, certificates of insurance, and renewal documentation.
  • Coordinate employee reimbursements, benefit-related finance items, compliance items, and other recurring administrative finance activities.
  • Assist with employee entry and exit processes, as needed.
  • Exhibit at industry conferences to support and market the organization's procurement billing services.

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business, or related field required.
  • CPA, MBA, or master's degree in accounting, finance, or business preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience in financial management preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Experience with various Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Human Resource Information System (HRIS) and GAAP.
Compensation The estimated base compensation will be $110,000-$130,000.
