Position Summary Bright Start Learning Center
  • Johnstown is seeking a caring and dependable team member for a hybrid Cook and Teacher Support (Early Childhood Education Assistant) role.
This position supports both early childhood nutrition and childcare classroom operations , helping create a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment. The Cook prepares nutritious, child-friendly meals in alignment with CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) guidelines. When not in the kitchen, this role provides classroom support in an early learning center , assisting teachers, covering breaks, supporting daily routines, and ensuring children feel safe, supported, and engaged. Additional duties may include transportation support (school bus driving) and assistance with center operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Meal Preparation & Kitchen Duties (Child Nutrition Services) Plan and prepare meals and snacks following CACFP guidelines and child nutrition standards Maintain portion control and accommodate food allergies and special diets Follow all food safety and sanitation procedures in a childcare kitchen setting Monitor and document food temperatures and maintain required health logs Manage kitchen inventory, ordering, and food production record-keeping Classroom & Early Childhood Education Support Provide classroom assistant teacher support as needed to maintain staff-to-child ratios Support daily routines in early childhood education classrooms (infant, toddler, preschool settings as applicable) Cover staff breaks and assist with transitions, supervision, and activities Support implementation of lesson plans and classroom engagement Build positive relationships with children, families, and childcare staff Transportation & Program Support Drive center bus when qualified (child transportation / school transportation support) Assist with arrival, dismissal, field trips, and transitions Support center events and daily childcare operations Professional Responsibilities Participate in required trainings (food safety, CACFP compliance, early childhood education, transportation safety) Maintain confidentiality of children, families, and staff Comply with all childcare licensing, health, and background requirements Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent 6+ months experience in childcare, early childhood education, or institutional cooking Food Safety Certification (ServSafe or equivalent preferred) Valid driver's license; ability or willingness to obtain school bus/transportation certification preferred Knowledge of child development, child nutrition, sanitation, and classroom management basics Strong teamwork, communication, and multitasking skills Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry up to 35-50 lbs Ability to stand for extended periods in kitchen and classroom environments Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, sit on floor, and move throughout childcare facility Ability to supervise children in indoor and outdoor early childhood environments Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations and assist with evacuations or injuries Ability to work in varying weather conditions Ability to assist with child transportation and bus loading/unloading duties Reasonable accommodations will be provided in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
