JOB GOAL
Provide a comprehensive counseling and guidance program to middle school students, consults and collaborates with administrators, teachers, parents and staff to enhance their effectiveness of helping students, and provide support to all educational programs.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implements the school counseling and guidance program curriculum and interprets guidance program to students, staff and community.
  • Guides and counsels students through the development of academic, career and personal/social plans in small groups and individually.
  • Adjusts student schedules to provide maximum coordination among students, staff and community, maintain class balance and meet academic goals.
  • Refers students and their parents to appropriate specialist, special programs or outside agencies.
  • Provides prevention and intervention services.
  • Consults and collaborates with administrators, teachers, staff and parents in understanding and meeting the needs of students.
  • Initiates referrals to the Director of Pupil Services concerning home teacher, placement in special education, Section 504 or for special evaluation and counseling.
  • Monitors current class enrollment count to achieve balance between classes where possible. Maintains statistics necessary for annual reports, projected enrollment, etc.
  • Counsels students regarding attendance and makes recommendations to SARB.
  • Works with outside agencies such as the Probation Department, counseling services and Welfare Department.
  • Communicates with parents through a variety of means. Holds parent conferences when needed to discuss the individual pupil's progress and to interpret the school program.
  • Administers group-standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
  • Provides continuing development of critical thinking skills, especially decision-making.
  • Selects and requests books, instructional aids, and supplies and maintains inventory records as required.
  • Maintains professional competence through participation in inservice education activities provided by the district or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as necessary or assigned.
  • Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve attitude and learning problems.
  • Communicates with parents and school counselors on the individual pupil's progress.
  • Supervises pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday.
  • Performs basic attendance accounting and clerical tasks as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
