Job Summary:
The Custodian Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the custodial team and ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and sanitation of all assigned areas within the facility. This role combines hands-on custodial duties with leadership responsibilities, including scheduling, training, and monitoring performance of custodial staff. The Custodian Supervisor will also be accountable for ensuring compliance with safety procedures, proper use of equipment and chemicals, maintaining updated cleaning logs, and managing adequate cleaning supplies.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Supervise, lead, and support a team of custodians to ensure all assigned areas are properly cleaned and maintained. Create and manage custodial work schedules, ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts and facility needs. Train new custodians in proper cleaning techniques, safety procedures, and use of equipment and cleaning chemicals. Perform and oversee custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, polishing, dusting, trash removal, window cleaning, and moving furniture/equipment. Ensure restrooms are maintained to sanitary standards, including disinfecting floors, sinks, toilets, and replenishing supplies. Maintain accurate and up-to-date cleaning logs to document daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks. Monitor inventory of cleaning products and request/order supplies as needed. Inspect work areas regularly to ensure custodial staff are meeting cleanliness and safety standards. Assist with snow removal, lawn care, and other seasonal facility upkeep. Perform minor building and furniture repairs as necessary (e.g., replacing light bulbs, tightening fasteners). Operate and ensure safe use of motorized cleaning and maintenance equipment. Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, providing feedback and coaching to custodial staff. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent required; additional coursework in facility management, leadership, or safety compliance preferred. Minimum of 2-3 years custodial/cleaning experience required, with prior supervisory or team lead experience strongly preferred. Working in or supervising cleaning within a clean room environment is strongly preferred Strong leadership skills with the ability to supervise, train, and motivate a custodial team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to build positive working relationships. Effective problem-solving and decision-making abilities, including handling unexpected facility or staffing issues. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage schedules, cleaning logs, and supply inventory. Ability to maintain accurate records and prepare reports related to cleaning, inspections, and safety compliance. Proficient in the safe use of cleaning chemicals, manual tools, power tools, and custodial equipment. Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office, scheduling systems, or facility management software) preferred.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to regularly bend, stoop, move from ground level to higher levels, and lift up to 50 lbs. unassisted. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb (ladders, lifts, and scaffolding), reach, lift, pull, push, stoop, squat, bend, and stretch throughout the assigned shift. Ability to work in varying temperatures, indoors and outdoors, and perform seasonal tasks such as snow removal and lawn care.
