Job Summary:
The purpose of the Video Engineer is to ensure the best possible visual experience for the audience and the performers during a live event regardless of the venue or logistical challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
The VE directs the construction, calibration, operation, and strike of the various video systems specified for an event. The VE is also expected to participate in the pre-production preparation/QC of and the specification of the system for inventory pull and truck loading.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
Maintain safety as top priority and ensure compliance with all applicable safety and regulatory standards Supervise, lead, train, and mentor teams of video technicians and other support personnel as required to develop their skills and abilities related to video system installation and operation Specify video systems that are appropriate for the artists, the venues, and the audiences Specify all components and hardware required for the complete installation of various video systems Effectively communicate and problem-solve with clients, artists, engineers and their representatives Set up and operate various video systems and as required for shows Develop and perform advanced routing schemes as required for shows with appropriate software Perform advanced troubleshooting of the various video systems and other related systems Maintain, calibrate, and repair video equipment as needed to ensure all equipment is functioning properly Perform other collateral duties related to show and shop support as required
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree or certification in Video Engineering, or a related field is preferred, but relevant experience is highly valued Proven experience (5+ years) as a live video engineer in various settings (concerts, festivals, corporate events, theaters, etc.) Experience "calling" events, overseeing show technicians on performing cues, switching inputs, and directing camera positions Expertise with a variety of switchers, LED processors, scan convertors, and scalars (e.g., Barco, Blackmagic, Novastar, Brompton etc.) Advanced understanding of networking, signal types, routing, and standards Advanced experience with camera and remote PTZ systems Ability to troubleshoot technical issues under pressure and adapt to changing live environment Excellent communication and teamwork skills Willingness to work irregular hours, including evenings/nights, and weekends. Willingness to travel as required.
