Job Description
- Support department's communications necessary in carrying out the department's normal and emergency operations
- Help develop radio installation standards for the department's field equipment
- Renew, modify, and establish new FCC licenses for NYSDOT radio equipment also be familiar with FCC licensing rules, guidelines and protocols
- Assist in the design, evaluation and maintenance of the Department's land mobile radio systems and its components throughout the State
- Provide periodic preventative and remedial maintenance on radio, microwave, satellite, and networking equipment, and develop test procedures and performance standards for such equipment and associated antenna, cable, antenna system and IP and telephone network equipment
- Establish and manage department-owned and rental Communications Tower sites
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electric equipment, software, and configuration, and supporting systems for radio, data, and satellite equipment
- Test for radio interference from outside sources and equipment and make recommendations for remediation
- Specify maintenance procedures and oversee contractor work
- Review monthly radio work reports for trends and common issues and address with vendors
- Survey and procure additional sites necessary to expand communications
- Maintain contracts with vendors for preventative maintenance and repair services statewide
- Setup and program mobile and portable radio equipment to department parameters
- Provide support to the department's field personnel as to the proper operation of radios
- Research and test new equipment
- Complete annual radio tests to find and address communications issues
- Monitor radio system status and use for compliance with Federal regulations and standards
- Collaborate with Agency partners as needed on communications issues
- Communications planning involving cellular networks supporting TSMOResponsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
A college degree in electrical engineering, electronics engineering, applied engineering physics, or a related field may substitute for general experience as follows: associate's degree
- two years; bachelor's degree
- four years; and master's degree
- five years.
