Job Description

Sports Editor - Sand Mountain Reporter The Sand Mountain Reporter is seeking a motivated, community-focused Sports Editor to lead coverage of local athletics across Marshall County and the surrounding area. This position is responsible for planning, writing, editing, and producing engaging sports content for both print and digital platforms while building relationships with coaches, athletes, schools, and the community. The ideal candidate has a passion for sports journalism, thrives in a deadline-driven environment, and enjoys telling the stories that matter most to local communities. Responsibilities Cover local high school, middle school, and community sporting events. Write game recaps, feature stories, athlete spotlights, and season previews. Photograph sporting events and edit photos for publication. Coordinate weekly sports coverage for both print and online editions. Edit submitted articles and ensure accuracy, AP style, and publication standards. Maintain relationships with coaches, athletic directors, and local organizations. Manage sports schedules, statistics, standings, and special sports sections. Post sports content to the newspaper's website and social media platforms. Meet strict publication deadlines while producing accurate, engaging content. Assist with special publications and other newsroom projects as needed. Qualifications Experience in journalism, sports writing, photography, or a related field preferred. Strong writing, editing, and interviewing skills. Knowledge of AP Style is a plus. Ability to work evenings and weekends during sports seasons. Comfortable attending sporting events and interacting with the community. Strong organizational and time management skills. Valid driver's license and reliable transportation. Degree not required; relevant experience and a passion for local sports journalism are preferred.
Pay:
$40,000.00 - $45,000.00 per year
