Managing EditorSouthern Minnesota Regional PublicationsLocation:
Flexible - (So MN, either Owatonna or Faribault)Salary:
$75,000 annually + bonus opportunityReports to: Publisher/Editorial DirectorPosition OverviewWe're seeking a dynamic Regional Managing Editor to lead our newsroom into the digital future while maintaining our commitment to exceptional community journalism. This role combines traditional editorial excellence with digital innovation, audience engagement, and multi-platform storytelling across our nine Southern Minnesota publications.The ideal candidate will be a strategic leader who understands both the fundamentals of quality journalism and the evolving digital landscape that connects news organizations with modern audiences.
Key ResponsibilitiesEditorial Leadership & Content StrategyEdit and enhance stories, columns, and community content across all platforms with focus on digital-first publishingDevelop and implement content strategies that serve both print and digital audiencesOversee special section development and production, with opportunity for freelance collaborationEnsure editorial standards and journalistic integrity across all publications and platformsDigital Innovation & Audience DevelopmentLead digital content strategy including social media, newsletters, and website optimizationDevelop audience engagement initiatives to grow readership and community connectionImplement SEO best practices and analytics-driven content decisionsExplore emerging digital storytelling formats (video, podcasts, interactive content)Monitor audience metrics and adapt content strategy based on performance dataTeam Leadership & DevelopmentSupervise and mentor editorial team of 12+ staff members:3 Associate Editors3 Sports Reporters5 News Reporters1 Community Desk Assistant10+ Stringers/ContributorsProvide coaching and professional development focused on digital skills and modern journalism practicesFoster collaborative newsroom culture that embraces innovation while respecting community journalism valuesOperations & Community EngagementCollaborate with pagination team on print layout while prioritizing digital content flowManage day-to-day community communications across multiple channelsBuild and maintain relationships with community leaders, sources, and readersCoordinate coverage across nine publications to maximize efficiency and impactEnsure timely, accurate reporting that serves local communitiesRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field5+ years of editorial experience with leadership responsibilitiesStrong editing skills with attention to detail and AP style proficiencyDemonstrated experience with digital publishing platforms and content management systemsUnderstanding of social media strategy and audience engagementExperience managing teams and developing staffKnowledge of media law, ethics, and journalistic standardsPreferred QualificationsExperience with SEO, analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media insights)Video editing and multimedia storytelling capabilitiesNewsletter and email marketing experienceBackground in community journalism or regional publicationsProject management experience with special publicationsFamiliarity with modern newsroom workflow toolsWhat We OfferCompetitive salary up to $75,000Opportunity to shape the digital future of established community publicationsLeadership role with significant editorial autonomyCollaborative work environment with experienced teamChance to make meaningful impact in Southern Minnesota communitiesApplication RequirementsPlease submit:
