Editor
The Sylva Herald
Sylva, NC (In Person)
Full-Time
Job Description
We're a 100-year-old, family-owned newspaper and our editor (Dave Russell) wants to retire. Best applicants would be from 'round here, at least from Western North Carolina. Dave currently reads and edits all press releases for the outdoor/health/education/living pages, writes about five stories a week, handles obits, opinion and online subscriptions, etc. It's a lot, and the pay and benefits are terrible, but we come and go as we please as long as we get a good paper out. We have an excellent designer and 1.5 reporters. Dave has agreed to stay on as a clerk/consultant to ease the transition to a new editor. We never have meetings. We don't work Fridays to save $$$$. The building is great (we have ghosts, roof access, and a flock of chickens right outside the window), the town of Sylva is wonderful, Jackson County is one of the friendliest, best places you could possibly live. There are three breweries downtown.
