The Northern Light Layout Editor 532240 Anchorage, Alaska, United States Student Employee Closing on: Jun 30 2026 Student Assistant 2 UAA VC Student Affairs Add to favorites View favorites The Northern Light, UAA's student-run newspaper, is currently recruiting for a Student Layout Editor. If you have interest in the field of newspaper editing we invite you to apply. The layout and web editor is responsible for designing the printed edition of The Northern Light. Also, they maintain the online presence of the paper by updating The Northern Light website and social media with new stories each week. They upload video projects to Youtube and publish a weekly email newsletter. The layout and web editor works with reporters and editors to ensure that only material ready for publication is published. They work with advertising representatives and the ad manager to ensure that any purchased ads run at the appropriate time. The layout and web editor works under the managing editor. They work with other staff on the paper to prepare, develop and repackage content for use in other projects. They hold weekly office hours and turn in a timesheet withments every other week. The layout and web editor helps implement projects and achieve the long-term goals of The Northern Light. Weekly expectations:

  • 12 hours per week Office hours: 2 hours per week (outside of meetings in the office) Attend weekly staff meeting Upload all stories to website Share all stories on social media Send email newsletter Create layout for printed edition (print weeks only) To thrive in this role, applicants should possess excellent writing and editing skills.
Applicants should be interested in the news media and be willing to work as a team to ensure only high quality material is published. Applicants must possess excellentmunication and time management skills. Applicants should be team players who are good at giving and receiving constructive feedback. The editor will be responsible for maintain the online presence of the paper so it is critical that the applicant is familiar with technology, social media, andputer software. Experience with printed news design/editing and website design/editing is very helpful in this role.
Minimum Qualifications:
To be eligible for student employment, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA), be in good academic standing, or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility. f. Position reappointment is contingent upon successful progress toward degreepletion and performance evaluation.
Position Details:
This is a student assistant 2 position that works 8-12 hours per week, with a pay of $13.82/hour. This position is open to undergraduate students only.
