Job Description

Job Title:
American Sign Language (ASL) Deaf-Blind Intervener An Intervener acts as the vital bridge between a deaf-blind learner and their world, offering essential support and access to information throughout the instructional day. By interpreting the environment and facilitating communication, the Intervener helps empower learners to achieve their educational and social goals as outlined in their Individualized Education Program (IEP) or service plan. This role involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, including visual impairment specialists and other service providers, to meet each learner's unique needs. Interveners utilize a range of communication methods—such as American Sign Language (ASL), Signed Exact English (SEE), and tactile cues—depending on the learner's requirements. This is an itinerant position that requires reliable transportation, as placement assignments may change based on learner and organizational needs.
Key Responsibilities Direct Support:
Provide one-on-one support to a learner with deaf-blindness during the scheduled day, as specified by the learner's IEP or service plan.
Environmental Access:
Facilitate the learner's access to information typically acquired through hearing and vision, ensuring meaningful engagement with their surroundings.
Communication Development:
Support the learner in developing expressive and receptive communication skills using individualized strategies, which may include ASL or tactile communication.
Relationship Building:
Establish and maintain a trusting, interactive relationship with the learner to promote social and emotional development.
Collaboration:
Work closely with IEP or service teams to implement instructional modifications, track progress, and adapt strategies as needed.
Documentation:
Maintain accurate daily logs, communication logs, and other required documentation to ensure effective communication among team members and families.
Instructional Support:
Assist with creating instructional materials, preparing Braille resources, and facilitating community-based instruction. Participation in
Meetings:
Attend IEP or service plan meetings, learner staff meetings, and relevant training sessions.
Professional Growth:
Engage in ongoing training in deaf-blindness and related areas to enhance knowledge and skills. Other duties include but are not limited to: Accurate and professional service logs, Material preparation, Braille preparation, Active participation in employee meetings Subbing as needed and appropriate
American Sign Language Deaf-Blind Intervener Qualifications and Skills:
Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) Intervener Certification/Credential (preferred) Ability to use simultaneous communication (SIM-COM) Feels comfortable working in close physical proximity to students while frequently using touch to communicate with and instruct students who are primarily tactile learners Able to communicate information gained through hearing and vision Feels comfortable working with students with moderate to severe disabilities Demonstrates frustration tolerance, emotional maturity, stability, and ability to perform under stress Willing to be flexible in regard to work assignment Shows ability to exercise good judgment, cooperation, tact, and discretion in dealing with the student, family, and others Shows interest in developing additional knowledge and skills Follows team decisions, established policies and procedures, and designated lines of communication and authority Punctuality and reliability Willingness to learn new skills and obtain certification Must be prepared and comfortable working with students with moderate to severe aggression.
