Position Summary Information Definition West Valley College is accepting applications from qualified persons for establishing a pool of individuals interested in future part-time assignments as Sign Language Interpreters. Under the general direction of the Director of the Disability and Educational Support Program, the incumbent provides sign language interpreting services for instructional classes, related academic activities, and campus events. Assignments involve standard complexity factors, including the communication system required, subject matter difficulty, pace of interpretation, and the number of consumers served simultaneously. West Valley College, though just minutes from the heart of the Silicon Valley, is in a beautifully park-like setting on 143 wooded acres. This physical environment enhances the existing warm and inviting collegiate learning environment. Should you be invited for an interview, you will be contacted by a representative. Assignment This is a part-time, hourly position, with assignments located at West Valley College. The assignment may be during the day, evening, or on Saturday and/or in an on-line/distance education format. The assignments are as needed, during Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter terms, and may last anywhere from an hour to several consecutive assignments. Salary and Benefits $55-$77 (hourly) Due to the part-time, temporary nature of this position, benefits are not included.Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience:
A combination of formal education and documented professional interpreting experience that demonstrates competence and readiness to perform at the level required for assigned interpreting services. Ability to establish and maintain effective, cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff. Ability to work effectively with students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. Knowledge of communication methods and techniques used when working with deaf and hard of hearing consumers. Working knowledge of the interpreting process to accurately convey the meaning, intent, tone, and register of the consumer's message. Ability to interpret and transliterate between ASL, spoken English, and other sign systems at speeds appropriate to the assignment, across settings such as classrooms, events, conferences, and one-on-one meetings. Ability to hear spoken English and use ASL, Signed English, and/or other manual sign systems to effectively generate language. Working knowledge of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct. AND Understanding of, and sensitivity to the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds, disability, and sexual orientation of community college students, faculty and staff. Desired Qualifications Certification from the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) - Level 3 or National Interpretation Certification (NIC) at Generalist Level Certificate of Completion from an accredited interpreter training program. Two years of attendance at a post-secondary educational institution Examples of Duties and Responsibilities Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following: Under general supervision, provide sign language interpreting services to facilitate effective communication, primarily in classroom and instructional settings. Deliver interpreting services for students, faculty, staff, and campus visitors, including short-term assignments such as conferences, meetings, and other academic or college-related events and activities. Support one or more assigned students; assignments may involve serving different students across multiple classes and may include team interpreting to provide training opportunities or relief coverage. Attend required training and participate in continuing education to maintain professional competency and ensure safe, effective service delivery. Provide timely feedback to the DESP Program Analyst regarding barriers, concerns, or challenges impacting service delivery. Work cooperatively within the college community. Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community. Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice and/or bias.
