Job Description

Ventura Superior Court is accepting applications to fill a vacancy and establish a list for future vacancies.
First Application Review :
May 8, 2026 Under general supervision, the interpreter works under oath and in accordance with the Standards of Judicial Administration, recommended by the Judicial Council, providing Spanish interpreting/translating services on an assigned and as needed basis for parties to proceedings, including witnesses, defendants, attorneys, other court personnel, and members of the public.
THE POSITION
This is a single level classification. Employees in this classification perform consecutive and simultaneous interpretation of courtroom proceedings, as well as sight translation. Employees also provide written translation of documents for court use as directed. Interprets from and to English and Spanish using simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation modes during court proceedings, for Spanish speaking individuals. Interprets for judges, attorneys and other court personnel during court proceedings at the direction of the court. Notifies the court of any issues or situations that may impede the interpreter's performance. Researches and understands the functions of the court and the terminology used in court which may include but not be limited to, legal, technological, scientific, and/or medical terminology. Perform other duties for the department as assigned such as coordinating daily office activities.
Education :
Completion of High School education, or its equivalent
Certification:
Possession of a current and valid certification as "Certified Court Interpreter" issued by the Judicial Council of California on behalf of the State of California in the Spanish language.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to orally convey the meaning from and into English and Spanish language by interpreting in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight translation modes. Ability to accurately convey meaning, without editing, summarizing, adding meaning, or omitting, ability to interpret impartially. Ability to use correct grammar and vocabulary of English and Spanish. Knowledge of culture and customs of the groups and communities using specified language. Ability to recognize and respect limit of authority and responsibility. Ability to work effectively with others who have objectives counter to assigned role. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information. Ability to drive to another location of the Court or areas where Court business are conducted.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Ability to use office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, fax, and assisted-listening devices, as required by the assignment. Knowledge of and adherence to all California statutes, Rules of Court, and applicable personnel rules concerning court interpretation. Knowledge of and adherence to interpreter ethics and standards as stipulated in California Rules of Court Rule 984.4, Professional Conduct for Interpreters. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.

INTERVIEW PROCESS
The interviews may be consolidated into one process or expanded into multiple interviews contingent upon the size and quantity of the candidate pool. Following the evaluation of the applications, the most qualified candidates may be invited to an oral board panel interview. If an oral board panel interview is conducted, top candidates from the oral board panel interview will be invited to interview with the hiring director, hiring executive officer and/or members of the court executive management team.
