Job Description

The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator provides Spanish/English interpretation between patients/families and hospital service providers. This position coordinates the system of interpretation requests, arranges coverage of those requests and maintains data on interpretation needs. The Interpreter/Cultural Mediator assists hospital staff to develop cultural competency in working with Latino populations. Education and/or

Fluency in spoken and written Spanish and English. Outstanding interpersonal and organizational skills. Education and/or

Undergraduate degree in human services or related field, preferred. Bicultural preferred. Spanish speaking patients and families and hospital providers. Conduct patient/family interactions with respect for differing culture, beliefs and levels of understanding. Maintain efficient and accurate system of logging and filling requests for interpretation for all Spanish speaking only patients. Monitor written translation needs and verbal interpretation needs to develop effective ways to meet those needs. Provide accurate written translation for all documents translated to Spanish. Identify opportunities to improve patient care and maintain quality improvement data. Assist hospital providers with their understanding and respect for cultural differences through informal and formal training. Mediate cultural issues for staff and families. Demonstrates knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families. Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
