Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract Embark on an enriching opportunity supporting a 4th-grade student who is embarking on their journey as a new ASL learner. This contract position is perfect for skilled Sign Language Interpreters eager to make a meaningful impact in an educational setting near Kansas City, KS. You'll provide crucial communication access in a full-time role through the end of the school year, with the potential for extension into the Extended School Year (ESY).
Key Qualifications:
Valid licensure as a Sign Language Interpreter with the Kansas Commission on Deaf/Hard of Hearing (KCDHH) Demonstrated experience in educational or school settings, particularly with elementary-aged children Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) and the ability to tailor interpretation to a young, new ASL learner Strong interpersonal and communication skills Ability to collaborate with teachers, staff, and families Cultural competence and sensitivity in working with diverse student populations
Responsibilities:
Provide real-time sign language interpretation for a 4th-grade student during classroom activities, instruction, and school-related events Adjust interpreting strategies to support a beginner-level ASL user, ensuring robust language access and comprehension Facilitate communication between the student, teachers, peers, and school personnel Collaborate with the educational team to monitor and adapt support as the student's language skills develop Maintain confidentiality and adhere to professional standards in line with school policies and ethical guidelines This role offers a regular Monday through Friday schedule, 7:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., giving you both a fulfilling assignment and predictable hours.
