Job Description

OSV is seeking a part‑time, costumed Interpreter to support the daily operation of our Horse Program. This role helps deliver engaging and educational horse‑drawn ride experiences while supporting animal care, facilities upkeep, and visitor interpretation. OSV is the largest outdoor history museum in the Northeast, showcasing a rural New England town of the 1830s across more than 200 scenic acres. Key Responsibilities Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. Support daily Horse Program operations, including feeding, watering, cleaning, and observing animals for health and wellness Assist with daily horse‑drawn ride experiences for visitors Engage visitors through historical interpretation and educational programming Greet, orient, and provide information to guests to enhance their museum experience Work toward mastery of historical content and practical skills related to the Horse Program Collaborate with colleagues to provide a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for all visitors Promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all interactions Program Support Assist with developing tours, routes, and programs that enhance the visitor experience Participate in programs for a wide range of audiences including families, students, interns, and lifelong learners Use a variety of interpretive techniques such as demonstrations, hands‑on activities, tours, and participatory learning Collaborate with the Museum Education Department on special programs and initiatives Schedule & Work Environment Outdoor work in varying weather conditions Weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings required Evening programs may include Christmas by Candlelight , Phantoms and Fire , and other special events Occasional travel to partner institutions (e.g., Coggeshall Farm Museum) Physical Requirements Regularly lift and carry items up to 50 lbs , with occasional heavier lifting Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work around large animals for extended periods Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this position. Qualifications Horse and/or large‑animal experience preferred (not required) Experience working with the public in a museum, educational, or interpretive setting preferred (e.g., museums, 4‑H, education programs) Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to work cooperatively with diverse audiences and teams Demonstrated commitment to inclusion and accessibility Associate's degree in Agriculture or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience Commitment to Inclusion Old Sturbridge Village is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. Pay:
$17-$19 per hour
Schedule:
2-4 days per week, year‑round (hours vary seasonally)
