Job Description
Sign Language Interpreter Reports to:
Exceptional Children's Director or Designee Purpose:
To provide consistent interpretation and translation to hearing impaired students.Qualifications:
High School diploma and extensive knowledge and training in sign language 48 Semester hours towards an Associate's degree or must take and pass Work Keys Test. NC License from the NC Interpreter/Transliterator Licensing Board EIPA score requirement of a 3.3-3.5Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ability to effectively transliterate and interpret at a rate commensurate with conversational and lecture speech.Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Follow the Code of Professional Conduct established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Adheres to professional practice standards in service delivery and conversational and mannerisms. Seeks to improve professional knowledge and skills Transliterate and interpret for hearing impaired students in the classroom as specified by the individualized education program (IEP) and their language needs/mode of communication. Collaborate with the student's EC Case Manager to ensure needs are being met Transliterate and interpret for IEP meetings Transliterate and interpret for extra-curricular activities outside of the school day as assigned Assist the TOD in providing training to school-based staff to better support assigned student. Maintain an impartial attitude during all interpreting situations by avoiding any interjection of personalized comments or advice to the hearing-impaired student. The interpreter should not attempt to answer questions asked by the student but should insist that the student ask questions directly to the teacher. The interpreter should not assume the role of the classroom teacher. Advise the hearing-impaired student and staff about the correct use of an interpreter. Serve as a team member working with the classroom teacher and the teacher of the hearing impaired, by reviewing lessons to ensure accurate interpretation of material. Interpreters should become familiar with the vocabulary, concepts, and sign/cues prior to class presentations. Assist in promoting positive feelings between hearing impaired students, school personnel and other students by establishing and maintaining cooperative relationships. . Maintain a continuous dialogue with TOD and direct supervisor During the class time when interpreting/transliterating services are not utilized, the I/T shall engage in reading educational materials to support their work If the assigned student is absent, the I/T shall report the absence to their direct supervisor or designee. If needed, during this time, the I/T will be assigned other duties as directed by theEC Director or Designee Term of Employment:
