Job Description

Category Schools - Sign Language Interpreter Job Type Contract Make an impact as an ASL Interpreter in a welcoming educational environment, providing vital support to a profoundly deaf kindergarten student in a self-contained setting. This contract role starts in August 2026 and runs through May 2027, offering a consistent 35-hour workweek within a single school. You'll play a crucial part in creating a supportive atmosphere that promotes communication, participation, and confidence for your student.
Desired Background & Skills:
Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and thorough understanding of Deaf culture Experience providing educational interpreting in school settings Familiarity with early childhood development, preferably in elementary or kindergarten environments National Interpreter Certification (NIC), EIPA certification, or equivalent recognized credentials preferred Ability to adapt interpreting style to meet the unique needs of young students Strong commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and collaboration with educational staff
Key Responsibilities:
Deliver one-on-one interpreting services for a profoundly deaf kindergarten student throughout daily classroom activities and interactions Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and families to ensure a fully accessible learning environment Accurately interpret spoken English into American Sign Language and vice versa, facilitating communication between the student, peers, and staff Support the student's engagement, comprehension, and social participation during lessons and school activities Maintain records of interpreting activities and actively participate in educational planning when appropriate You'll find purpose and reward in making the school experience accessible and enjoyable for a young learner.
