THEATER OPERATIONS TECHNICIAN

DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, assists the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation (MOT) in coordination of campus and community use of the theater; performs a variety of technical work in the construction, repair, maintenance, operations and rigging of theatrical equipment and effects of the Performing Arts Center; and performs other related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Work hours in this job classification will be irregular, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

• Reports directly to the Director of Maintenance, Operations and Transportation.
• Exercises direct supervision over assigned personnel.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Constructs, repairs and operates theatrical lighting, sound, scenic elements, and rigging, including but not limited to operating a professional 32 channel digital mixing console;
• Wiring and repairing sound systems;
• Video and audio, recording, and live-streaming as appropriate;
• Operating a lighting digital control console;
• Hanging and focusing lights;
• Understands and executes lighting plots, que sheets and schedules;
• Assists clients in basic designing, implementing and supporting all technical needs in a production;
• Performs skilled electrical, lighting and sound work;
• Performs skilled carpentry and scene construction;
• Sets up theater equipment in accordance with user requests;
• Trains students in use of facility and systems;
• Assists in maintaining an inventory and providing security for all tools, equipment and supplies in the theater;
• Operates and maintains an orchestra pit and full-fly system;
• Works closely with the Financial Clerk in the MOT Department to estimate, invoice, and reconcile Use of Facilities fees and charges.
• Performs related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• General audio engineering principles related to theater sound systems;
• General electrical theory and technique in theater lighting systems;
• Theater technical operations;
• Types and uses of stage equipment;
• Operation of tools and equipment used in maintenance work;
• Safety practices and procedures, including

OSHA & USSITT

safety standards;

• Housekeeping techniques;
• Recordkeeping practices and procedures.

Ability to:

• Operating a 32-channel digital mixing console with an 8x8 matrix (tbd);
• Operating a digital and manual lighting control system;
• Performing routine maintenance activities in electrical, carpentry, and mechanical craft areas;
• Maintain cooperative working relationships with the public;
• Operate safely in the technical theater environment;
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
• Read and draw lighting plots and schedules;
• Work from plans, specifications and schematic drawings and charts;
• Maintain simple records;
• Supervise or lead the work of students or volunteer crews.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

Any combination of training, education and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

The equivalent of two years theatrical production experience, including technical experience in light and sound direction or design: and,

Training:

Completion of at least two years of college level coursework in theater arts. Or four (4) years of experience or training as listed above. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Incumbent is often required to work irregular shifts and overtime; work with dust, fumes, solvents, glues, climbing and working on ladders, grids, and catwalks at heights up to 65 feet.

Heavy Work:

Lifting, carrying and/or pushing 100 pounds with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Mobility:

Positions in this class require mobility of arms to reach, and dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate small objects.
