Description:
$62,355 Annually with Generous Benefits Including a Free Family YMCA Membership Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Sports and Family Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all sports programming, family programs and events, and Child Watch operations at the branch. This position is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating high-quality programs that strengthen youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility while creating a safe, welcoming, and engaging experience for all members and participants. The Sports and Family Director leads staff and volunteers, manages departmental budgets, drives program growth and member engagement, and ensures operational excellence through exceptional customer service, risk management, and compliance with YMCA standards. This role serves as a key member of the branch leadership team and is expected to model YMCA leadership competencies and uphold the organization's values and mission.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Leadership & Program Operations Provide leadership and oversight for all sports programming, family programs and events, and Child Watch services to meet the needs of the community and advance the YMCA's mission. Develop, implement, evaluate, and continuously improve programs that promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Identify opportunities to expand existing programs and introduce new offerings based on community needs, member feedback, and strategic priorities. Ensure programs are safe, engaging, well-organized, and deliver a high-quality participant experience. Maintain program schedules, registration processes, staffing plans, and operational procedures. Staff Leadership Recruit, hire, onboard, train, schedule, supervise, develop, and evaluate staff and volunteers. Foster a positive, collaborative, and accountable team culture through coaching, communication, and professional development. Conduct regular staff meetings, performance evaluations, and ongoing training to ensure high-quality service delivery. Promote a culture of safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement. Financial Management Develop, monitor, and manage departmental budgets. Achieve revenue goals through effective program planning, enrollment strategies, and retention initiatives. Monitor expenses and allocate resources responsibly to ensure financial sustainability. Analyze participation trends and program performance to support informed decision-making. Member Experience & Community Engagement Deliver exceptional customer service by building positive relationships with members, participants, families, and community partners. Address member concerns promptly and professionally while fostering a welcoming and inclusive environment. Collaborate with branch leadership and community organizations to strengthen partnerships and increase program participation. Facility & Risk Management Ensure program areas, equipment, and facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained. Monitor program operations to ensure compliance with YMCA policies, licensing requirements, risk management standards, and safety procedures. Respond appropriately to emergencies, accidents, and incidents while maintaining accurate documentation. Ensure all staff maintain required certifications and complete mandatory training. Association Leadership Participate as an active member of the branch leadership team. Support Association initiatives, special events, and strategic priorities. Assist with the Annual Campaign and other fundraising efforts by serving in assigned leadership roles. Attend all required meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities. Perform other duties as assigned in support of department operations and the YMCA mission.
Requirements:
Must be at least 21 years of age. High school diploma or GED required; Bachelor's degree in Recreation, Physical Education, Sports Management, Education, Business, or a related field preferred. Minimum of three years of progressively responsible experience managing sports, recreation, youth, or family programming. At least three years of supervisory experience, including recruiting, hiring, coaching, developing, and evaluating staff. Demonstrated experience developing and growing programs while achieving participation and revenue goals. Strong leadership, relationship-building, and team development skills. Excellent organizational, project management, and problem-solving abilities with the capacity to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. Experience managing departmental budgets and achieving financial performance goals. Commitment to providing exceptional member service and creating an inclusive, welcoming environment. Working knowledge of risk management, safety practices, and program quality standards. Current CPR/AED and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, kneel, and move throughout the workday. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to move throughout YMCA facilities, including gyms, fields, playgrounds, pools, schools, buses, and program sites. Ability to supervise participants by sight and sound at all times. Ability to quickly respond to emergencies and safety concerns. Ability to demonstrate, assist with, and actively participate in sports and recreational activities as needed.
